New Mcarthur High School

oob kids tend to get unfairly villianized. you will likely have a handful of capitol hill area kids who dont get into walls etc. and an oob percentage that will decrease w time.

I feel bad for current 6th grade parents but as a younger elementary parent, I’m pretty excited.

Current Hardy 6th grade parent here. We did not buy in this neighborhood expecting to be able to rely on DCPS even through middle school, so I feel like we're already ahead of expectations. Every year we can stay in DCPS is money in the bank. We would love for MacArthur to be a real option for us. I'm willing to take a chance on it. Hardy has shown us that a good principal and a strong cohort are basically the launch codes.

Current Hardy 7th parent and we've been positively surprised too. 6th grade teachers at Hardy were mostly excellent - better than those at the feeder - and 7th seem to be just as good thus far.

Relax man! Are you always this uptight?
Name changes are hard.

Seems to be the opinion in my neighborhood too. Everyone was expecting to either shell out for privates or move to MoCo after elementary, but things have been pleasantly positive for most at Hardy - there are fewer complaints with it than Deal. We're hoping the new Macarthur school is the same way (though we're not sure how kids are going to get there, it kinda is in the middle of nowhere). Fingers crossed.

Agree- Hardy has turned out to be the school of choice over Deal. Who would have thought? I LOVE living in Palisades and having these amazing options!

This school of choice for who exactly? People that are zoned for Hardy?

Can we stop the narrative that Deal is overcrowded? The DCPS facilities plan says Deal main building is built for 1370 and 1603 with trailers. Last year, final numbers were 1394. It’s perfectly right sized. I’m glad you like Hardy, it’s a fine school. So is Deal. There are pros and cons for smaller and larger schools.

they make a good point. hardy was pretty much a dcum no and deal was considered the only viable choice back when the current students there were prek aged. things change.

No dog in this fight but I wouldn’t say things have changed. Hardy has become acceptable for IB parents and that’s great. We need more high performing or middle performing middle schools. Dare I say we now have “Alice Deal for all WOTP” which included access for some EOTP. Wells is moving along quite well IMO. However, all things said and done, most people in the District would still choose Deal over Hardy.

Yup. And current parents like it that, hardy seems to be ignored in the greater DC culture wars. Hope same happens with the new high school. Small enough to slip under the radar of most parents and the rest of the city. Though to be honest
the inaccessibility of the school will do most of the work.

We are actually in the position of choosing Deal or Hardy for our kids. (We moved and ended up switching from being IB in one to IB for the other. We can stay or enroll in the new school. We think kids would do fine at either and have some friends at both.) We are choosing Hardy for a lot of the reasons stated. We really liked what we see there. We are cautious but intrigued by the new high school. We'll see how that goes.

They are considering an IB curriculum. DCPS must present a curriculum approach to MySchoolDc and the public by mid October. Phase 1 of construction begins in December.

It’s happening.
