JR is sufficiently large and overcrowded that i would as a gtown/palisades/foxhall/glover park area family try the new school. i also think some families in the capitol hill area will lottery/enroll and drive there.

The new HS will be a heck of a drive from Capitol Hill.
Close to an hour each way and no good public transportation.
I would be surprised if many kids from CH try to enroll there.

the d6 bus literally goes straight from the Hill to the new HS. mark my words next year DCUM will be FULL of W6ers crossing their fingers for the new HS lottery.

Bowser finally got Capitol Hill a high school!

The D6 bus can take an hour to get from Stanton Park to MacArthur Blvd in rush hour traffic. Doable but 2 hours a day to commute to/from an untested school isn't going to be cause a stampede to get in.

you are obviously being sarcastic/funny. but actually she did (kind of). capitol hill in particular has very well attended dcps elementary schools. but dcps has had a very hard time getting families eotp to try their in-bound middle school over 5-12 charters. the issue for a lot of ppl is high school (they cannot see going to eastern etc.) if their child is not admitted to an application school that they like.

Why don’t they move already.

It is one thing to be commuting over an hour to Bronx Science or Thomas Jefferson but no one in

will seriously consider it for the new untested MacArthur HS that is built on an elementary school campus.
Maybe a handful of kids with no other options will do it but that is it

move where exactly? move when - 6th grade? 9th? high school issues aside, living in dc eotp has lots of advantages - good public transit, reasonable commutes downtown, city amenities, etc.

they’ll uber there, or parents will get together and get a private bus.

they will carpool. the drive 395 through the mall and then up through gtown isnt good but also arguably isnt all that bad even during rush hour. the kids will take the D6 when no one is available to drive them. it will be very was hoping for walls didnt get in lets try this.

The d6 will take over an hour. My son took it to camp this summer and hated that long ride.

395 -> Indy Ave -> 66 -> Whitehurst Fwy -> Canal Rd is tough for the first few runs, but a breeze once you have it down. It’s a hell of a hack for getting cross-town.

Getting slightly back to topic, if the new high school fails to relieve JR and mainly draws students from the Hill, it will be a failure on its merits.

DCPS will require in-boundary students to attend after the transition period. The OOB set asides are presumably for those “furthest from opportunity.” But if Hardy parents opt not to enroll the first year when they have a choice, yes, those spots will be quickly filled by w6 kids who didn’t get into Walls.

If it gets off to a poor start, students “required” to attend will head for the exits too.

In terms of overcrowding at J-R, it’s irrelevant whether Hardy alums go to MacArthur. The point is they won’t go to J-R.

True, except for all the people with siblings at J-R and the ones who move.

Of course, it would be another fine example of DCPS addressing its challenges by running people off. Central office is like a snake eating its tail.
