For kids going to trade? Doesn’t sound like a good plan for competitive colleges

There is an awful lot of space between trade schools and competitive colleges.

Early graduation, 2 years at Montgomery College, and then guaranteed transfer to UMD-CP? That is an excellent financial deal for students who want to save money and work in high demand fields in our community.

Doesn’t make sense, you don’t need to graduate HS early to go the MC -> UMD route

Yes. Take Algebra 1 by 8th grade. Take either the Health or Tech credit in Sumer after 9th or 10th, then double up English 11 and 12 in 11th grade. Or take English 12 summer after 11th and graduate in summer.

Most students have more credits than they need to graduate by end of Junior year. English 12 is the last thing they need. One option some take is dual enrollment at MC during 12th grade. They can be either part time or full time at MC, but still participate with their HS for sports, clubs, and traditional senior year events.

Now students must take 4 years of math in HS. It’s not about finish a particular course. I imagine you could take something the summer after junior year.

You are incorrect. Read the state law. Students must have 4 credits of HS math and they must take math each year in high school. This doesn’t mean they must stay in high school 4 years.

I didn’t say you did. But it is also true that some students want to graduate early and start at MC sooner. And yes, this means they would graduate with a bachelors 1 year sooner too. That’s actually the point for some students.

MCPS says you can't graduate in 3 years.

https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/curriculum/0199.21_GraduationAtAGlance_Classof2023.pdf

MARYLAND DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS
The state of Maryland authorizes one diploma for all high school graduates, based upon successful fulfillment of four categories of requirements: enrollment, course credit, student service learning (SSL), and Maryland assessments. Students must satisfactorily complete four years beyond Grade 8 to meet the enrollment requirement. All other requirements are summarized in the table below.

Dual enrollment gets you college credit while you complete your HS diploma, but you're still taking 4 years:

It is always good to go back to the policies to understand the full scope.
https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/isbra.pdf section III.F (pg 11)

F. Alternatives to Four-Year Enrollment

Students shall satisfactorily complete four years of study beyond Grade 8 unless an alternative enrollment plan is developed and a waiver is approved as outlined below.
1. Waivers may be approved for any of the following reasons:
a)The student is accepted to an accredited college before high school graduation.
b) The student is accepted to an approved vocational, technical, or other post-secondary school program before high school graduation.
c) The student enters high school at a chronological age greater than that of their grade level peers, or
d) The student has completed all graduation requirements.[i]

So, back to OP's question. Yes, you can graduate high school in 3 years, provided you meet all graduation requirements. I teach juniors in HS. Every year there are a few who double up with English 11 & 12 to graduate early and they walk at graduation. This year, I had several who took English 12 over summer, and they are no longer enrolled.

Agree with this. There are very few students who will benefit academically from one fewer year of skill development.

Even genius kids who race through high school/college/grad school then face employment hurdles because no one wants to hire a 23 year old professor to teach 19 year olds. Calm down people. Life is not a race.

So nice to see actual facts referenced!

Can you take English in summer school if you didn't fail it first? Years ago, my old HS (not mcps) wouldn't let us.

Not everyone has to (or wants to) follow the same, typical UMC pathway to college and career. There are plenty of lower income students and families who are more than happy to accelerate their path to a BS or BA degree while saving money by living at home. Getting a good paying job in the county a year earlier can be a huge deal for some families.

In the post-pandemic world, there are now full high school core courses available in a virtual format. Many of them are available as "original credit", although English is listed as not offered that way, at least through Central High School. English 12 equivalent in summer could be done by taking a summer class at MC (ENGL 101).

My HS a few kids did it in 3.5 years. But what is point?

Yes, it is possible to graduate in 3 years. My DC did it during the pandemic.. Have your child talk to their guidance counselor to see if it is possible for your particular situation. My DC’s guidance counselor made sure the process went smoothly and that all requirements for graduation were satisfied.

There are all sorts of reasons why a student may want to graduate early. My child with dyslexia chose to graduate early to attend a 2 year college where accommodations would actually be implemented. Took one year of foreign language in 7th and 8th grade in middle school (middle school had regularly scheduled option of semester of Spanish spread over 7th grade, and another semester of Spanish spread over 8th grade), and Spanish 2 freshman year to meet foreign language graduation requirement. Took Algebra in 8th, Health during summer of high school, gym equivalent credit from Montgomery College in evening of junior year, and English 4 summer after junior year. Participated in sports (swimming and MSI soccer teams) during middle and high school. Graduated summa cum laude from 4 year college with double major (where had transferred for junior year with scholarship). Professional job immediately upon college graduation.
