Last time it snowed (Jan. 2022) we were out of power for 4 school days in our neighborhood. It was awful and no way am I using cell data for online school.
Happens a lot here, so this policy is short sighted. |
| If they take away snow days, they darn well better end the school year earlier. The 180 day (or whatever the hour calculation), factors in the assumption that school will be closed at some point in many years. Reduce the year down to 175 days. |
DP I'm in VA. Doesn't VA law require 180 student days on the calendar? |
I also want to add that eliminating snow days will be like the beginning of pandemic every year and possibly every instance the buildings are closed. Schools close far more than businesses. Last minute decision to cancel school will be a clusterf* with parents scrambling to figure out how to deal with children at home. Remember how easy it was to get K-3 kids to sit in front of a computer for school??? |
Yes. There is no way to have less days (though we could theoretically have early releases all June I guess if we have extra hours. I’d be game for that!) |
But…but wait. I thought remote learning was eeeeeeeevil and “OMG not real school!!” |
Oh, the raving mommy melodrama of it all. God forbid your family ever face any actual REAL “trauma.” You’ll crumble to dust. |
That’s not how it works in MD. School is scheduled for more than 180 days so that you have some padding for emergency closure. When we have a harsh winter, you might burn through all of your extra days and need to get the permission of the state to hold school less than 180 days. Sometimes the state says no and extra days are added. |
People do a lot a falling out these days. I saw six foot dude throw a violent fit when called “sir.” Crazy times. |
In VA we can use hours or days to measure the school year. Many school systems would add minutes to the school day rather than end the year later. In MD, they only count days (or at least that was the case when I taught there 15 years ago). The use of hours also allows school systems to add 10 mintues to each school day and have more padding for “emergency” days. |
LOL. You nailed it. All the fake people claiming they aren't using school for childcare now are demanding remote learning instead of snow closings. Sheesh. They can't even keep their fake stories straight.
