The schools you list are good schools. The school culture at most of them (except Mann) leans woke parents in Crocs running bake sales for causes. Bake sales with healthful items since the Council outlawed cupcakes and all that. Not a bad crowd, but a distinct crowd. You may want to take into consideration if that would be a departure from your current school and if so a welcome one?

Snort. Obviously you've never been to a bake sale at Murch. Cupcakes galore!!!! The last bake sale was the Girls on the Run team raising money for UNICEF. I have no idea where you get your information (no one has a kid at all those schools), but it's...creative, to say the least.

Really, I thought Mary Cheh banned them with her healthy foods act? They are on the lam then. Bake sale was simply a stand in for fundraiser-no need to get so sniffy.

Not at murch but another school and I have never seen a parent in crocs running a healthy bake sale. Lmao.

You've never seen the Janney mom /parent table fundraising by Whole Foods etc? So many crocs -or whatever the latest version would be.

And, you’ll make more friends too. My three all are going through - Murch/Deal/JR. Not perfect but my kids are all thriving, less entitled then they would be and know how to advocate for themselves as well as dealing with issues.

You can’t just go back

False. Privates will give your seat away and you are NOT guaranteed a return to the school.

Can confirm that this is very much not the culture at Mann 😉

This was us. We started at a private in K and moved WOTP at the end of our child's kindergarten year. We seriously thought about switching to the local public DCPS as we were moving, but this also coincided with the start of the pandemic. From a pandemic standpoint, absolutely no regrets. Child is thriving at their school, and no immediate plans to change, but we also reassess as needed. I'd say stay where you are, OP.

Maybe gather more information about the public you’re zoned for - talk to neighbors, and if allowed go visit during the school day? My kids did JKLM elementary then private for middle school and we were very happy with our public elementary and feel more connected to our neighborhood (and I too suspect the academics were better there). But it depends on what your kid needs.

+1
If you can afford it this is very true.

We went from public elementary school to private middle school in 6th grade and the transition was fine.
Our DC was fine, we did a writing camp the summer before 6th and everything worked out well.

OP - I urge you to take a long hard look at DCPS “performance”
during Covid. It will tell you all you need to know about the nature and quality of the leadership of the system - which bleeds to every single person employed there. To varying degrees, of course.

Against that backdrop - consider that DCPS spends the most $$ per student. Epic fail.

Private if you can manage the tuition.

FWIW, I had a neighbor who tried public, after 2 weeks didn’t like it but no space at old school to go back.

Presumably you are already committed for the coming year and you can meet and network with neighbors over the next several months to learn about their experiences with your local public.

You asking on the private school forum whether you should put your kids in public? LOL

Yep, you are not going to get a balanced view!

They are also less likely to re-admit you, because you walked away. Privates schools are about being part of a community. Once you've shown you're not that committed to the community, unless there's a very good reason you walked away in the first place, they're not going to just let you back in.
