Kid heading into first. We just moved in a a zone for JKLM, Eaton/Stoddert. Trying to decide if we should stay private or try our local school. Anyone been in similar circumstances? If so, what did you do?
FWIW, I had a neighbor who tried public, after 2 weeks didn’t like it but no space at old school to go back. |
| Depends on your finances. If you can afford to stay private- great. If not, go public. I think the DC Publics still are inferior/subpar. |
| +1. Just to be clear OP, the schools mentioned above are the crème de la crème of DCPS. However, they are still DCPS. If you can afford private, stay private. I had to make this decision, and stayed private. |
| Does your child need private? Our child doesn't. Private needs him. |
| Are you already in private and work be pulling out? How old are your kids generally? Are you OK with Deal/Hardy, Wilson etc? Or would you be looking to switch back in? The schools you list are good schools. The school culture at most of them (except Mann) leans woke parents in Crocs running bake sales for causes. Bake sales with healthful items since the Council outlawed cupcakes and all that. Not a bad crowd, but a distinct crowd. You may want to take into consideration if that would be a departure from your current school and if so a welcome one? |
| If you want private middle or high, stay private. It’s easier to go from private to private. |
| OP said heading into e first grade? Do you mind sharing the private school? |
| Don’t want to out myself but one of these BVR, NPS, Norwood or Lowell. |
Snort. Obviously you've never been to a bake sale at Murch. Cupcakes galore!!!! The last bake sale was the Girls on the Run team raising money for UNICEF. I have no idea where you get your information (no one has a kid at all those schools), but it's...creative, to say the least. |
Not at murch but another school and I have never seen a parent in crocs running a healthy bake sale. Lmao. |
Me personally, if you have a rising 1st grader and you’re pretty satisfied with the school, I’d stay. TBH, I wouldn’t give up BVR or NPS for any of those schools if your goal is to be private for middle and high school. |
I've never seen a healthy bake sale. I guess they do label the stuff with nuts, or if it's gluten-free? And I can't recall the last time I saw a pair of Crocs on an adults at pickup. |
| Save some money and try public - you can always go back. Plus, having all your kids friends in the neighborhood and being able to walk to school is priceless. And, you’ll make more friends too. My three all are going through - Murch/Deal/JR. Not perfect but my kids are all thriving, less entitled then they would be and know how to advocate for themselves as well as dealing with issues. |
| If you're at Norwood, you'll get a stronger academic experience at the publics. (And higher expectations of student behavior). |
| Stay private, OP. Your kid(s) will be fine either way. But you would always be comparing and never be happy. |
