Atheism’s sexual misconduct problem

If your point is that powerful orgs cover up misbehavior, well American Atheists covered it up too until BuzzFeed forced them to act. Then Silverman used the atheist old boys network to land another well-paying job with a different atheist group.

You almost sound like you’re excusing atheist sexual misconduct because there are fewer of you. It might be better to notice that, with just a handful of national atheist/humanist orgs, two of them employed this creep.

Yes, atheists, like all kinds of people, can have a sexual misconduct problem.

People in powerful positions sometimes abuse their power. It's wrong no matter who does it

Then why the disproportionate number of threads about Catholics and LDS? Those threads can get vicious, but here you are waving your hands about atheist abusers.

No hand waving. Any abuser is bad -- with or without God. Unfortunately, people of god sometimes use their supposed special influence to take sexual advantage of people.

Religions present themselves as being "godly" and thus above sexual sins. And some religious leaders abuse their supposed godliness to take advantage of people in their religion who think the pastor has some special connection with God.

In contrast, people who don't believe in god who are sexual predators don't use God as a tool to draw victims in. They're just creeps.

NAMBLA has a whole philosophy about man/boy love.

I’m an atheist but I have nothing to do with American Atheists. I don’t support them and would never give them any money, much less 10% of my income. I don’t see what point you’re trying to make here exactly.

You don’t see the answer to your own question about, essentially, white male power?

I have no idea what you’re trying to say. I don’t support organizations that excuse or cover up sexual misconduct or child sexual abuse. I just ask that Mormons and Catholics do the same and stop supporting their churches.

As I should.

Do you agree Catholics? Will you do the same?

I, as an atheist, condemn them too and ask the same question of Catholics and people of any religion.

And you will grow old waiting for them to do so.

Be honest. Catholics and others condemn predatory priests almost every day on DCUM.

LOL. Never heard of "American Atheists" before. Looks like they only have 3,500 members.

What does this have to do with any atheist aside from those 3,500 members? Oh right - nothing.

As compared to the 1.36 billion Catholics in the world who are all part of the same organization.

Lame, OP. You'll have to do better with your atheist bashing.

I’m an atheist, but I had to walk away from the toxic side of online atheism

“I was far from the only one targeted. A lot of online discourse can turn vitriolic, but writing on atheism seems particularly so. A study on Reddit found that its atheist forum, probably the largest collection of atheists on the Internet, was the third most toxic and bigoted on the entire site.”

This guy has a great podcast, btw. He’s a respectful and decent guy.

DP. Most atheists are not members of American Atheists so they have no responsibility for goes on in that organization. Most self-identified Mormons are a part of the LDS church.

But they stay in the conspiratorial organization and continue to support it with their dollars. And just as many try and defend it. Sorry this is nowhere near an equivalence.

Dude, people blame atheism, religion, money, culture, etc etc when we all know damn well the problem is MEN.

Nobody said that. This puts a fine point on the hypocrisy of atheists’ daily slams against Catholics, though.

Catholics here say they’re trying to change it from inside. It’s totally an equivalence.
