At time, yes, I slip. I revert to "the phone booth". |
+1. It was already named for a president, Washington National Airport. Now you hear "reagan washington national airport" which is just plain stupid. |
+100 If you knew how Reagan treated the air traffic controllers like $hit by firing 11K of them, you’d never refer to any airport as Reagan. https://www.npr.org/2021/08/05/1025018833/looking-back-on-when-president-reagan-fired-air-traffic-controllers |
I grew up here, my parents grew up here, we all call it Reagan. So yes, people do call it Reagan, even if you do not, and that's ok. We can call the airport different things without needing to shout in all caps at one another... Reagan, National, DCA - everyone knows you're talking about the same place. Deep breaths. |
I am not, but what you mean to say is you weren’t specific with your original post. “If you’re really from here, 50+, you have an aversion to changing with the times, and you like to make people feel excluded for the most petty reasons, then you’d call it National.” |
|
OP here. I’m not a native to the area but I’ve been here 15 years. Far and away the most frequently referenced name I hear is Reagan.
I think the one thing we can all agree on is that BWI sucks. |
LOL!! +1 |
Maybe I'm too pro-Maryland, but I like BWI. For the few international arrivals it has, customs and immigration is way faster than Dulles. The layout is decent too -- sort of a spoke system so no getting on a train or too long walks. It also has the highest passenger numbers of the 3 airports in the region, so I guess passengers are voting with their feet also. I do wish they had reserved parking like IAD and DCA added in the last year. Less stress about finding a space. |
+1 I've only taken one or two international round trip flights form BWI and they were all a MUCH better experience when compared to Dulles. We have Global Entry and even with that Dulles is a zoo. |
I like BWI too. I prefer DCA just because it’s closer to our house, but once arriving at the airport at BWI and DCA it seems to take equal time to get to my gate. And my kids love the playground inside BWI so that’s a perk. |

It is worth a lot to me to be able to take the metro directly to the airport (=DCA). No dealing with parking, having to drive home after a long trip, etc.
This is the norm in most European cities. |
| Nearly every Democrat I know calls it National or DCA and every Republican I know calls it Reagan. Pretty simple really. I strongly prefer to fly in/out of DCA. |
| My MIL and I have this passive aggressive thing going wherein I call it National and she responds with Reagan and I respond with National and so forth. We're all from Texas, but I moved here in the 1990's. |
IAD was DEFINITELY a zoo when I flew out of there (to Paris on United) tihs summer. And the plane itself was falling apart mechanically (we had 4 hours of delay, trying to fix various different issues). Not sure if the airport or airline are to blame for that. |
You mean Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport 😉. I don’t call National “Reagan.” |
