Why does Reagan seem so much busier and have so many more flights than Dulles, which is larger and has more international flights? Is it just my imagination?

More space at Dulles doesn’t feel as busy. Like having a party for 20 people in a two bedroom apartment vs a 5000 sf house.

Actually Dulles has surpassed NATIONAL (If you’re really from here, you don’t call it Reagan.) At least it did a couple of years ago.

Our perception of busy isn’t just about passengers. It’s about plane movements as well. If you have a similar number of passengers using a much larger number of smaller planes, that will feel busier.

It doesn’t. DCA is so amazingly calm compared with the awfulness of Dulles.

In May 2022,as an example, National had 619 passenger flights/day, while Dulles had 404, even though Dulles was only slightly behind in passenger count- 1.9 million vs. 2.2 million at National (just for the month of May 2022).

Obviously this is because Dulles has bigger planes on average, especially the larger widebody jets that can't serve National because the runway is too short (plus the gate areas are too small).

Agreed. If I have a choice, I use DCA

I use DCA because I live in Mt Vernon.

All 3 are American airports.

All 3 are terrible.

I’m 40, a local, and call it Reagan because that’s it’s name. Do you still call “capital one arena” the “MCI center” too?

I dont' care much about the topic, but tha'ts not a good analogy.

Calling Reagan National Airport "National Airport" and it's still clear to those who only know it by its new name. It's not a total name change like Capital One Arena.
