How concerned are you?

I don’t remember people getting stabbed at metro center.

It's definitely happened before now.

Your kids are much more likely to be attacked by local mentally ill people on metro or just for looking at another juvenile the wrong way.

This plus the homeless tents all over the place.

This. And the weak response to it. It’s as if citizens who don’t commit crimes are supposed to suffer in order to prop up and compassionately support violent criminals. I could go on for hours about the policies being implemented to “holistically address the roots causes of crime and move away from incarceration and strict penalties”, but it’s not worth it and the thread would break into two camps anyway. Those who just say “we can’t keep arresting our way out of things!” Meaning they’re okay with the rising crime and want to try out novel, progressive polices that have shown to exacerbate crime. The other camp is basically over it and wants to crack down on violent crime.

Last night was a complete disaster in DC. Mass shootings in multiple locations.

Crime is out of control in DC.

Much more scared of teenagers blowing your head off or some one shooting you because they perceived you looked at them the wrong way and 'disrespected' them.

DC is like Mad Max right now.

what has me concerned is that I just see a lot of mentally unstable people on the streets and in the metro. I haven't been stabbed or shot and don't expect to be, but I have switched metro cars multiple times in recent weeks because of loud arguments or weird/psychotic/intoxicated behavior on the metro. Also had to give some people a wide berth as a pedestrian. It seems like since 2019 (pre-Covid, pre-riots, etc.) there is just more evidence of social breakdown out there. I sometimes think I may be being excessively cautious but the homicide stats say I'm not.

crack years were worse in an absolute sense but this is the largest increase in homicides over a brief period ever recorded in DC or nationally. Direction of change is very bad.

DC native, and I agree that it's nothing like the crack years. But I'd also argue that it's the lowest point since then.

Been here since '72. Crack years were worse in terms of instances of violence but it was 95% contained to one population group. Your dime a dozen GS 10 Fed had virtually zero chance of being attacked.

That has done a 180 on the last decade.

If your definition of "done a 180" is "increased ever so slightly," sure.

homicide victims/100,000 people

Washington DC:

White: 3.9
Black: 102.4
Asian: 3.7

Fairfax County, VA:

White: 2.1
Black: 9.5
Asian: 2.9

Statistically being white in DC is virtually indistinguishable violence-wise than Fairfax or any other suburb that DCUM considers "safe," and being white in DC is virtually synonymous with being white collar regardless of your race - I guarantee those 102.4/100,000 murders happening to black people in DC don't include a lot of black Deloitte consultants.

The bottom line is despite the DCUM hysterics and media fearmongering, anyone who is in a position to be posting on DCUM during the workday (i.e. your "dome a dozen GS-10 Feds") has absolutely nothing to be afraid of in DC.

I thought all the shootings were in a 5 block radius at the open air drug market we call N Cap St?

This article from 2015 is near identical to yesterday: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/shooting-at-north-capitol-and-new-york-ave-ne-reports-say/2016/06/08/22ed652a-2db9-11e6-9b37-42985f6a265c_story.html

I think there were 13 shootings on one block of that area in 2013.

The only difference is NoMa gentrification is creeping that way. So white people are seeing stuff for the first time.

Link to the shooting of 13 people in one day in 2013: https://dcist.com/story/14/11/07/three-men-sentenced-to-combined-65/

Though I might be remembering this instead:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/three-sisters-wounded-in-capitol-street-shootings/2013/03/12/7db6403e-8b1f-11e2-9838-d62f083ba93f_story.html

Point being, that area near the projects is pretty much a shooting gallery, with N Cap providing a great and fast getaway for shooters and funneling in drug buyers from the suburbs.
