| Given the recent incidents at FBI buildings (including the recent alert at FBI HQ) and the incident at Congress today, are you concerned about safety in DC and your kids? My kids commute to MS and HS on public transportation and as we are gearing up for the school year this worry is starting to creep in. There are some very crazy violent people who are anti-government & anti-DC. |
| No - IM anxious about enough things - i don't want to add that to the list. |
This is not on my list of concerns, no. If morons come for the FBI, I don’t think they’ll use the metro? |
If FBI HQ is attacked, it would cause major chaos though. Make getting around the city nearly impossible. |
| Not remotely concerned. If my kids went to school near the FBI building, I'd think about worrying about this, maybe, but even then probably not. |
| I'm much more concerned about the random assaults, robberies, and carjackings in DC |
| More concerned with out of control crime in cities. Much more likely to get shot with a handgun in a random event, assaulted by a nasty group of teenagers, or carjacked. |
| If you regularly drive your kids in a car, you should cross all such worries off your list. Your risk of a car accident is waaaaay great than any of these other things. New is scary, unknown is scary, but emotions aren't facts, and the real danger to your kids is driving in a car. And if they're under 5, drowning, and if they're over 12, suicide. |

I think we have been living with the threat of terrorist violence (from diverse sources, including "homegrown") for decades now. Yes, I do think this is a time of escalating tensions that could result in more attacks that affect regular citizens.
Not sure what we are supposed to do differently, though. This tension really isn't new. |
+1. I’d be more concerned about the violent or mentally ill people hanging out on or near the metro. I know adults who have lived in the city for years and are now fearful of taking the metro. There is no way I would send young kids alone on the metro to fend for themselves against addicts, pervs, or juvenile delinquents. It’s just not safe. |
I am one such person (arrived in 1993). This era feels exactly like we are reverting back to Barry / open-air drug market / carjacking / crossfire bystander deaths. Re: OP, I am concerned that there have been credible reports of dirty bomb in front of FBI plans on the interwebs. Surveillance reporting. Do I think Adam White Supremacist from Michigan is coming to target me, personally, with his Ford F150 and AR 15? No, obviously. Toxin clouds are a whole 'nother thing, though. |
What? I take the metro to Union Station all the time. You need to get out more. |

Seriously. It isn't that bad folks. It is a blip higher than during the pandemic, but come on. It is nothing like the crack years.
|
| I agree, the crack years were worse. But it is the randomness of the violence now that feels scary. |
| I agree. |
