Is Georgetown really that much better than BC?

LOL. So what? Those days it was not uncommon to own slaves.

Actually, to sell 272 living human beings, including children, in order to keep your college open was uncommon. GTFO with your LOL and eyeroll.

The more I read about BC, the more I feel like it's on par with Georgetown - mainly because I feel Georgetown has declined over the last 25 years or so. Why is GU considered more prestigious?

BC is great, but the fact your child is applying ED there is meaningful for this comparison: Georgetown has no ED, so the difference in admissions selectivity between the two schools is even greater than would be indicated by simply comparing overall admissions rates.

Perhaps. I think the admissions selectivity would be even greater if GU moved to the Common App.

BC alum here. Which major is your child applying to BC for? Some departments will be equal in quality. Business school may be better at BC (especially given the alumni network I mention below) Your student will get a great education at either place if they want one.

The BC community and alumni network is truly amazing, so even if Georgetown has more of a recognition factor - I do not think your child will suffer. There are many very very high achieving students at BC. If your child does well there, they will have the same opportunities as a Georgetown grad. This is true for job placement and for graduate schools.

However, BC has no program that would compare to the Georgetown SFS school...but that's a very specific niche for Georgetown so BC is not different than most other schools in that regard.

If your child is from DMV already and isn't interested in SFS, I highly recommend BC over Georgetown. Boston is a great place to go to school. I came from DMV and have no different outcomes than peers who went to Georgetown and being away and having all the BC community has to offer is a big plus in my (biased) opinion.

Selective ≠ Quality

Yes, but selectivity has to be at least a component of any “on par” comparison. This isn’t a zero sum, selectivity vs. quality game. As for “quality,” I don’t know Georgetown well enough to compare it to BC; I will let other posters do that. But I can definitely compare the “quality” of BC to Holy Cross, another Massachusetts private Catholic school — and BC loses on that front.

The gimmicky application process is enough for me to dislike Georgetown.
DS loved BC on a recent visit and doesn't want to go to college 20 minutes from his high school.
Problem solved.

How so?

Also, you cannot lump BC into "another Catholic School" category. Jesuits will fight you over this. And fairly so, IMO.

"Gimmicky" because you can't just click a box on the common app. Whatever.
