Well then you need a different crowd. Mine is all self-made. Left home at 17 and never went back and got no help. Steve Jobs did not come from "money" LOL You need more education please go back to school. |
I seriously don't know anyone like this. I know people who are paying for college for their kids, but want their kids to have some skin in the game by contributing financially. I know people who can't afford to pay all of college for their kids, so need their kids to earn income to make college happen. I don't know of anyone who has means who insist kids pay off college themselves with side jobs. I can't imagine this is a super common. It's really hard in today's world to pay for college with side jobs. |
Are you talking about you or your kid? |
Agree. Maybe there are a few people with means who would do that but it’s not the norm. Maybe OP is referring to donut hole families who do well but not well enough to save/pay for a private college and don’t qualify for aid. |
| OP are you the kid who posted about taking $80k of loans? If so that’s a different scenario than what you’ve posted here. |
Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg etc, all had college paid by their parents. Some of them decided to drop out. |
Most parent want college paid off by aid, merit and side jobs. |
| or student loans |
| Such a stupid post. Most families "with means" DO pay for their kids' college education. If you're talking about families who won't OVERPAY, like by taking out loans to pay for private college, more power to them. |
"Jobs attended Reed College in 1972 before withdrawing that same year. In 1974, he traveled through India seeking enlightenment and studying Zen Buddhism. He and Wozniak co-founded Apple in 1976 to sell Wozniak's Apple I personal computer." |
I agree. This is outdated and put kids at a disadvantage. Nothing wrong with having a job, but creating unnecessary stress makes no sense. Best to do wealth transfer if you can. -low income mother |

"I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents’ savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months I couldn’t see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out."

Not true of people with means. We did not expect our kids to pay for college. We did expect them to work in the summer. I know people say no one pays full price for college but at DCs college, and many of the top schools, 30-40% of the kids are full pay. |
They are unicorns. Dropping out of college does not automatically lead to founding Apple. |
| There is a mythical belief that work ethics can only be learned by paid odd jobs. |
