Then who IS responsible?

The criminals are the who.

The real question is what, not who.

The criminals are responsible for the crime. But the solution to criminals committing crime is simple - lock them up and don't let them up if they commit crimes that you really don't want happening. Most people will not murder, rape, or assault others. Once you've locked up everyone who has proven that they will, then you will have a safer city (assuming you don't let them back out).

Our current city council is much more concerned with not being mean to any criminal than in protecting any innocent person. As such, they try to ensure that violent criminals are let out as soon as possible, or not locked up in the first place. And so we have more violent crime. Simple as that.

Ward 1 Councilmember who is tremendously soft on crime, wants to defund the police, believes in violence "interruptors" instead with no evidence that alternative approaches work. Her predecessor Jim Graham was a crook, but he was much more vigilant about safety and quality of life issues in the Ward and much more inclined to work proactively with police and businesses to try to prevent crime. Brianne does not care and the criminals know it.

Well said.

The irony of the position that a crook was concerned about crime.

No.

I would just not take the risk, particularly if you have kids. I would be worried about stray bullets. Wawa also just left because they could not deal with the amount of shop lifting they were subjected to. The crime will affect you in many different ways there. It looked like a very promising area a decade ago, but unfortunately it went massively downhill in the last few years.

Sad but true. The area has nice housing and potential but there are just too many low-life criminals in CH to make it a sensible area to live - and least not until the large criminal element in the projects gets the message that there are consequences for burglary, robbery, carjackings, and assault.

We live in Columbia Heights with our toddler and have never felt unsafe. Granted we’re about 10 mins from the plaza and closer to the petworth/park view border. I hate the plaza and avoid at all costs.

Must be nice. Most of the people in Columbia Heights rely on public transportation and need to access the metro station and adjacent bus lines which are at the epicenter of the violence.

They're an order of magnitude lower now than what they used to be when I lived there.

I dod some house hunting there but decided its not an area where i would like to live. I would rather have a less nicer house in a nicer area. I would rather go to Adams Morgan, Eastern Market or Logan Circle.

Not PP but I rely on public transportation and use a stop higher up on 14th for the buses and go to Petworth for the metro.

No. Your home could be broken into, your car and bicycles stolen, mugged while walking the dog, you or your kids hit by a stray billet, etc. Go to NextDoor just to get a glimpse of what’s happening.
