Columbia Heights High Crime

Why crime rates are so high in Columbia Heights?

For one thing, it’s the densest part of the city.

High concentration of Section 8 housing. Ward 1 Councilmember who is tremendously soft on crime, wants to defund the police, believes in violence "interruptors" instead with no evidence that alternative approaches work. Her predecessor Jim Graham was a crook, but he was much more vigilant about safety and quality of life issues in the Ward and much more inclined to work proactively with police and businesses to try to prevent crime. Brianne does not care and the criminals know it.

It's still 5X lower than it was 20 years ago when DC was the murder capital of the world.

Poverty, crime, drugs and mental health is just a bad combination and this area attracts all of these elements.

Would it be safe if you've nothing to do with such elements and mind your own business?

Which parts are the worst and must be avoided?

Yes and no. There are a lot of shootings so a lot of stray bullets. Eventually they are going to hit someone.

There’s also crime of opportunity like cell phone theft. It’s been a few years but a guy’s dog was stolen at gun point while walking him. That kind of stuff that will always keep you on edge walking alone.

Then there’s the drunken/passed out people who will randomly scream at you or expose themselves.

Look, I hate Brianne as much as anyone, but blaming her for an uptick in crime in CH is a bit much.

Then who IS responsible?

The criminals are the who.

The real question is what, not who.

I would just not take the risk, particularly if you have kids. I would be worried about stray bullets. Wawa also just left because they could not deal with the amount of shop lifting they were subjected to. The crime will affect you in many different ways there. It looked like a very promising area a decade ago, but unfortunately it went massively downhill in the last few years.
