I think it has something to do with Newt Gingrich turning politics into a bloodsport. Compromise is now anathema to even mainstream Republicans. Gingrich's legacy is carried on by Mitch McConnell, who has no interest in legislating to help regular Americans, but to stand in the way of Democrats doing something that Americans might find beneficial. Over a decade ago, by his revealed preferences and even his own words, his primary goal was to make Barack Obama a one-term president. Now, he's doing the same to Joe Biden.
There used to be a time when Republicans were decent. For instance, if they nominated a Supreme Court justice who wasn't suited for the job (because they were a toadie for Nixon, had a tenuous grasp of constitutional law, etc), they had the sense and respectability to withdraw the nom. Now, they'll ram through anybody they want. Why? Because f*** democrats, that's why. This attitude is why they stuck with Roy Moore, why they still stick with Trump, Gaetz, MTG, etc. |

Hating liberals is more fun, profitable, and electorally successful than loving America. I lost my father to Fox News. I went out to visit him as he was marrying his fourth wife, and the only thing he could think to talk to me about were the various liberal evils. Not, say, asking how his grand kids were doing.
During a previous visit many years before that, he was excited to show me the O'Reilly Factor when it was relatively new. It wasn't for me, but I didn't think a lot of it. I watch a lot of garbage he wouldn't like too. (Like, I'm physically unable to turn off Road House when it comes on.) But, now my father is 80+ years old and I think cable news and golf is all he does. The Internet and social media is like crack to the Fox News cocaine. Why does that sort of thing hook him and guys like him so much? I'm not sure. He's not evil or stupid. But, I'm sure he's annoyed by liberal thinking particularly and the type of strident liberal voices blaming straight white men for all of their problems in particular. Getting the message that, not only is he not the source of their problems but, also, those people are a**holes has to be appealing. Once you're in that cocoon, the tribalism takes over. And, eventually tribalism starts to look even a little cultish. One day, you find you're (metaphorically) in Guyana and someone's asking you to take a little drink. All along that progression, some people will wake up but many people will not. Do you turn away the cup before it's too late, and how much damage have you done or acquiesced to along the way? |
Wow. Just wow. |
| Happened to the Nazis. I am sure a historian can list the groups that devolved into madness as the Republicans are doing. |
