Roe v Wade and TTC

Also, if this happens, you should never go to a hospital in Virginia if you think you’re having pregnancy-related complications for the same reasons.

I think her larger point was that her insurance can now refuse to pay

DP. OP already said her insurance wouldn’t cover it anyway. She was asking about options for doing it legally if she had to terminate.

I already know my insurance, military, will not cover abortions for medical reasons. So that's 20K.

That said, not having the option to terminate? Awful. I'm already down about TTC. I've had multiple pregnancy losses so I might be at risk for this situation. This just sucks.

Wait, even before this, military insurance doesn't cover TFMR? At any stage, or just if you find out late at 20 weeks? I didn't realize this. Is this common? (My insurance would absolutely cover.)

Run to Mexico for the procedure

You should also worry about an incomplete miscarriage or an eptopic pregnancy.

I had an abortion not covered by insurance. I paid out of pocket. I had to pay extra because it was past 13 weeks. The fetus would never have survived more than minutes outside of the womb, and would have been in extreme pain for those minutes, but I was expected to carry the fetus to term. No thank you.

However, the cost was nowhere near 20k. The cost wasn’t even 1k.

I also worry for myself as I was starting to adjust to the possibility of going the IVF route and now I don't know if I'll even be able to do that.

I sent money here, there’s approximately 100 women needing to get an abortion right now and can’t as of today in AL https://mailchi.mp/2fb804646c31/we-need-to-send-100-patients-out-of-alabama?e=c3a529c70d

Terrifying. I miscarried a much-wanted pregnancy due to a massive subchorionic hemorrhage. My OB was worried I would bleed out if left to miscarry on my own, so I had a D&C. This wouldn’t be possible in so many states as of today. A procedure that saved my life would have been illegal. This is NOT UNCOMMON! How do we change the narrative?

It sounds like OP or their spouse are in the military. They have no say about which state they live in, which makes these laws particularly harmful to military families.

Yes, because of the Hyde Amendment. There’s a famous poster here from way back known as LIVID who was a fed and had to terminate due to anencephaly; federal insurance does not cover it. I can’t find her heartbreaking original thread but she’s here and on lots of other old threads about this.

Yes, this. All federal insurance plans do not cover terminations for medical reasons. I guess I'm fortunate that all my babies have died so far before the D&C / D&E

Yes, insurance will cover it. The problem is going to be with insurance networks that only have providers in one state. Around here, most of the insurance providers will have in-network doctors in MD and DC but if you live in Alabama, your insurance might only have in-network doctors in Alabama. Most insurance has a complicated process if you can’t get appropriate care in network but it’s not ideal if you are trying to make decisions on a timeline and will probably at least require people to pay up front and then try to get reimbursement.

If you live in a state where it’s banned, will your insurance still cover in a state where it’s allowed?

Went through this 14 years ago, got a lecture from the military Fetal Medicine doc about how "no federal funds can be used" after he handed me a folder with info for abortion. We went to NJ because my ILs live in Philly so we didn't have to spend the night in a hotel. It was I think $2500 because we were so far along, 22w. There was two week delay in getting a referral in the military system for Fetal Medicine. Our diagnosis was OI Type 2.
