Why is Safeway so expensive compared to others and it's the worst, please go bankrupt

I used to think the same about Safeway and only went to pick up sale items that I needed. I used to go to the Asian store for the rest. In 2020, I started using Safeway more since they were closer to me and less of a crowd during Covid. They started giving me JFU discounts on all the products I purchased so the prices are pretty reasonable now with those savings -eg: O Organics spinach 16 oz was $5.99, I used to get it for $5 with my discount. (Sadly they did away with that size and now charge $5 for the 11 oz. I guess if I start buying that they will give me a a discount on that). I shop Aldi and Safeway these days.

So is the one in Kensington. We are also Costco people but I buy everything else that I can’t get there or don’t want a ton of at Safeway. I find that they have the stuff I need on sale almost every time I go. If I had to go to the one in CCDC I might go somewhere else, though.

Imagine thinking that because you don’t like a business, they should go bankrupt. Are you 12?

I remember when the Safeway opened at 5th and L NW— completely changed my life! I used to have to go so far just to get groceries before, and without a car of my own, that was tough.

The one near us is awful. You have to check the dates on everything you buy because they consistently have expired food on the shelves. I only go there for last minute things, like a gallon of milk when I’m running out, or a forgotten ingredient for dinner.

I used to live in CA, and the Safeways out there were much better run. I don’t know what the deal is here, but the ones in the various NoVA neighborhoods I’ve lived in have all been terrible.

The Safeway on CT Ave near Chevy chase circle is pretty bad. Lots of expired meat and one time lingered too long at meat cases and noticed how disgustingly filthy they were. No thanks.

Safeway is owned by Albertsons with thousands of stores in 50 states. I doubt it will go bankrupt OP.

I shop mostly at giant because it is closer. I go to Safeway when I can’t find something. I’m glad it exists and that I have some choice . Prices seem the same to me. I haven’t noticed Safeway being more expensive.

Wegmans is better

Safeway is really inconsistent. There are some locations that are great--clean, spacious, good quality and have a wide selection of goods. The Glover Park and Rockville/White Flint locations are terrific; Kensington is pretty good. But other locations are mediocre to outright bad. At least if I go to a Giant, Harris Teeter or Wegmans, I know I'll get a similar shopping experience regardless of location.

Disagree on Giant but agree with the other two.

Agree, but I’m one of the hundreds of thousands of people here for whom the closest Wegmans are in Tysons or Lanham and they’re roughly equidistant. Not driving more than an hour round trip to go to the grocery store.

how can we hold safeway accountable, the yelp reviews aren't working as they have like 1 star

It must be based on where you live. In Arlington Safeway is one of the cheaper options. I just got three boxes of Cheerios for $4.50 yesterday! They are always having sales.

And, hit submit too soon - Wegmans is more expensive IME.
