Why is Safeway so expensive compared to others and it's the worst, please go bankrupt

Safeway is the absolute worst grocery store in the area , the worst service, inventory, staffing etc recently I've noticed they have raised their prices at least 10% over everyone else including better places like Harris teeter and Wegmans.

We've stopped shopping there, however why is this business still around? It is the worst.

Safeway dares to be in neighborhoods other chains wouldn't ever consider. Seems like you have choices. Stick with the others and leave a grocery store alone. It's not a fast fashion store.

I’m a fan of Safeway, sorry. The one near me is usually well stocked, the employees are nice, and it’s clean. It’s much cheaper than Whole Foods, which is my other nearby option.

My Safeway is fine but prices have gone up signficantly. I don't think that's unique to Safeway though.

I dunno. But OP is right. Safeway is often very expensive. I know for a fact that I can get the same kinds of oils and sauces from Hmart several dollars cheaper than what Safeway charges. It's crazy how much they markup some products.

In Bethesda, Safeway is pretty bad and there are many other options nearby. Giant has similar prices.

The Safeway on Sangamore has no self-checkouts (!) and when I got salmon from there and took it home, it had gone bad.

The Safeway on Arlington Road has a poor selection of produce, consistently, while the Giant about 0.5 miles up the road seems to do much better in this area, especially with organic produce options.

I use the J4U discounts and stack them with the sales. I also redeem my reward points for savings at the gas station or dollars.

Having said this, I buy only a handful of items at Safeway based on their weekly sales. Some weeks are better than others.

It's within walking distance to subdivision, too, so convenient for last minute things or when Giant is picked over and has no good sales.
We're Costco people and backfill at Safeway and Giant.

Hmart is no cheaper than Safeway nowdays. It used to be much cheaper but no longer true. I limit my purchase at Hmart.

I love their bakery, and they do have ok prices on meat. Surely the meat is not more expensive than Wegmans now? I have been working in Canada, so was not in a Safeway for a while.

If you hate it so much, why complain and wish for their bankruptcy? Vote with your feet and wallet and shop elsewhere.

Safeway in Olney is pretty good and well stocked, I think.

Why do they need to go out of business? Just don't shop there if you don't like it. Safeways are sometimes the only store in some neighborhoods.

+1 My Safeway is great. I've been in some that are not. Same with Giant - I've lived near a trash Giant and a good Giant.

People love Whole Foods but in my experience they have terrible inventory. I remember being told in produce "we don't normally have that" when I was looking for mint. C'mon.

+1 and it’s unionized and none of my money goes to Bezos. Shop where you want to shop, OP, and let the rest of us do the same.

+1. For years, the "Unsafeway" at 14th Street SE was the only store in my neighborhood.
