I'm laughing at OP.
First, I love the subtle dig at UVA. Yea, right, it and Villanova carry the same weight reputation wise in NYC and Boston. Clearly false. Second, OOS admissions to UVA are much, much tougher than Villanova. I have a good friend who has two sons going to school at Villanova. Both went after being rejected from UVA in state from a top NOVA publc high school. Get in before you start dissin', OP. |
| They're both great schools. Neither is a slam-dunk for admission. Have you gone to visit already? If he gets into both, definitely go back for a visit. I actually see some similar vibes and can understand why he likes them. |
Yes, but that has changed. Villanova’s stock has been steadily on the rise in recent years. Record number of applications this year and 23% acceptance rate. UVA has consistently been in the 15-17% acceptance range for OOS - 15% this year. UVA is tougher but not by much. |
| If you live in VA- why would you pay to go private to Villanova OP? UVA is much better (and I am no booster). The only people who would prefer Villanova are conservative Catholics who do not get n anywhere better. |
One of the boys is a freshmen. You have to take acceptance rates in context. At UVA the middle 50 percent of enrolled applicants last year had a 1400 to 1510 on the SAT, a 32 to 35 on the ACT, and 90 percent of students reporting ranking were in the top 10 percent of their high school class. These numbers are for all students. For OOS they'd be higher. For Villanova, here are the numbers:SAT 1320 to 1460, ACT 30 to 33, top ten percent 72 percent. Clearly there's a marked difference between OOS UVA and Villanova. The typical Villanova admit is probably on par with a skin-of-the-teeth UVA in state admit. |
Okay, come back when your kid gets in to both, then |
What are you talking about? Person 1 said you need the "most rigorous" check. Person 2 said that's not true and I assume wrote the follow up that it was asked about in a UVA information session. |
| The “most rigorous” is not a myth. At all. My neighbor and her husband both attended UVA. Apparently they have some program where an admissions officer will look at alumni kids transcripts etc and let the parents know if their child has a real chance of admissions. They essentially told my neighbor that by taking AP calc AB and not taking physics C at his super tony, competitive public HS his course load is not “most rigorous” and most likely would not get into UVA. Ironically he is at Villanova for engineering now. This “review” for alumni kids is not a myth nor is what this woman reported to me. She and her husband may be considered VIP alumni since they are now very rich, so maybe this was a courtesy not available to all alumni. |

I am talking about the fact that you shouldn’t bother comparing the two until your child actually has those two acceptances in hand.
You know the old adage, “Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched.” Child should be working on exceptionally good CA essays this summer and hopefully has very strong rec letters in hand. I wish you and your child the best of luck. |
Just had my third DC in 5 years accepted to UVA. Definitely not a myth. |
is this out of state because I have two in state kids at UVA and both took AP Calc AB as their highest math and Honors Physics (took AP bio, honors chem, honors physics). Granted they are in the College of Arts and Sciences not Engineering. |
| What about Vassar or Vanderbilt? |
They don’t start either B… |
It's not an admissions person. It's an alumni association staff member. Lots of threads about this and in those threads, there are reports that the alumni people don't always have the best advice. |
What does that mean? More weight lifters? Serious question. What is a “stronger” school? |
