I remember reading an article a long time ago about gun owners whose kids had accidentally shot and killed a sibling.

I don't remember the details but the main family that was profiled involved two low-elementary school aged brothers, and one had accidentally killed the other with the dad's gun.

What I remember vividly towards the end of the story was the dad one day telling the living kid: "I forgive you" (for killing the sibling). I can't quite describe the feeling of revulsion and horror I felt at those words--the guy who is clearly responsible for the death of his child, is unrepentant about having made guns available to his kids, effectively killing one and possibly ruining the other one's life. And on top of that, he feels entitled to "forgive" his kid, who is the real victim?
How do you even engage with that kind of psychopath?

But these teenage boys who shoot up elementary schools weren't criminals until they got a gun and made their first shot. And most of them would have zero clue how to obtain a gun like that illegally. Because they lack the skills to even know where to start. And if any of them had any kind of background check/interview before the gun was put in their hands, they would be thrown into a mental health facility. All you have to do is look at their social media accounts to see that they are dangerous.

You must have missed all the drunk-driving accidents. 10,142 alcohol-related fatalities in 2019 alone. In spite of all the laws against drunk-driving. Therefore, these laws are useless. Get rid of all of them. Drunkards will always drive drunk. Laws just inconvenience law-abiding people who want to get a couple of drinks on a friday night and are perfectly decent drivers after 2 beers.
You must have missed all the illegal immigration in all countries with border controls. Border controls and security are therefore useless. Get rid of all of them. Lawbreakers will always illegally immigrate. Having border controls that sometimes takes hours to clear inconveniences all the law-abiding folks who are coming in legally.

The fetishization of guns in this country is a national illness, and I don't know how to remedy it. DH owns a rifle, and we have a gun safe and ammunition is kept separately under lock and key. He couldn't imagine keeping an unsecured gun in a house with kids. But this is a country where law makers share Christmas cards of their entire families holding guns in front of the tree...this is somehow seen as festive, apparently.

I don't know how you come back from this level of cultural sociopathy.

The posters on this thread are clueless and most of you have no real understanding of what Republicans believe or why they vote the way they do.
In fact, this entire site this past week has been full of angry insults and hateful rhetoric aimed at Republicans.

My first thought when I read some of the hate spewing on here is to wonder if the poster has children. And, if she/he does, I wonder if that poster speaks about other people in front of her children the way she writes about them on sites like this.
If so, you are part of the problem. Your children are watching and listening. They hear your hate and your insults toward others. They are learning from you that there are people who are not to be valued - simply because they disagree with you.
You are not teaching them kindness. You are not teaching them how to have a useful discussion with others. You are simply spewing hate. This is what they are learning from you.

Passing more laws may make you feel good, but it will NOT solve the problem. Hell, many of our current laws are not even enforced. I read over and over how gun crimes by felons are dismissed through a plea deal or because of "restorative justice."
We could ban guns tomorrow, and we will still likely have another school shooting unless we do something that actually makes a difference.

If you have been paying attention, you know that many, many things went wrong with this crime. From ignoring the red flags on the part of the shooter to the open door at the school, to the lack of a security guard present. And, that is just the start.

I don't know all the answers, but I do know that simply passing a law in the heat of a moment will not cause change. There are always going to be evil people who have no value for life. We need to get better at identifying these people, learn what causes them to be the way they are, and deal with them BEFORE they act on their evil. We also need to make schools more secure and learn from everything that went wrong here.
