Is Washington DC Segregated By Race or Money

the problem with DC is that the poor are mostly black/brown. Whereas poor whites are more rural. It leads to people thinking that all black people are poor or that all poor people are black. Neither are true.

Ugh, that's just more whataboutism. Most of the black/white divide in DC is caused by structural racism.

A lot of the money- white and black- is transplants who have nothing to do with structural racism. If DC is really segregated based on money not race, where is the middle class enclave in upper north west? Other cities segregated based on race tend to have middle class or poor white communities in addition to poor black neighborhoods, but DC is all about money

I think these posters think it’s just a coincidence that most rich people in DC are white and most poor people are black. Nothing to see here!

I love the good folks in upper NW who have a dozen BLM signs in their front yard but will fight tooth and nail against any new homeless shelters.

It usually is the best way to find the woke NIMBYs, look for BLM signs, especially handmade ones.

And will call the cops if they see a poc walking down their neighborhood who they deem as “suspicious”.

Posting a BLM sign is literally *the least* they could do for black people.

The answer is both, duh. What a question!

both

Yeah, the "or" in this question is betraying some ignorance

DC is segregated by race BECAUSE generations worth of money were stolen from black people, going all the way back to slavery and continuing through segregation and redlining all the way to today, where a resume with a black-sounding name will get 50% fewer callbacks than an identical one with a white-sounding name, and where loans for black applicants have a significantly higher interest rate than identically qualified white people.

I just don't understand how DC is segregated by race and not money

Do you live in LA? Is this why you used the term "west DC" ( which doesn't exist btw)

DC is segregated by money, but also by choice. I know many rich black families who are East of the Park in Crestwood, Shepherd Park and Colonial Village. I know black families in Ward 3, but most of my black friends (I am black) don't prefer Georgetown, Cleveland Park, etc.

west likely means west of rock creek park. its mostly socioeconomic (and highly educated transplants v. long-time mostly black residents). but there is a complex history with racial elements to it.

here is a counterpoint: there are some very nice albeit relatively low amenity neighborhoods east of the river. they are predominantly black. there is statistically racial segregation in dc.

Well, the rich people -- who come from all over the US and the world to DC -- tended to excel in school, eschew street crime, and prioritize achievement over smoking pot and other leisurely pursuits. Also, UMC blacks have historically fled to the suburbs (with some exceptions: upper 16th St) to avoid the miserable DCPS. So, UMC white people flooding in, UMC black people cruising to PG. Of course, there are some incredibly rich people in Georgetown / Normanstone / Kent, but no one there would bat an eye if the BigLaw partner moving in next door were black.

The people across the street from me in 2022 don't make a lot of money because they hang out on their porch all day smoking weed, drinking, cursing, and blah-blah-blah-ing.

Uh, why not both?

This. One thing striking about visiting Baltimore is seeing all the white poor people, from the merely low-SES to derelicts and good old fashioned bums. Don't see to much of that in DC because of its peculiar nature.
