Erin Palmer

NP. Mendelson is an arrogant ass. I am protest voting for Erin. I literally don’t care what she stands for.

I like Erin's platform because I believe in government oversight and I think the council has been sorely lacking in this area.

Plus, Phil seems to be basically retired in place and happy with the status quo. And I am not.

I love her!

He is such an ass, and it will feel really good to boot him. Trust me, I'm still glad we dumped Brandon Todd.

This thread gives me hope. It seems like she’s done a ton of outreach and door-knocking; maybe it will pay off and she’ll catch Phil napping.

Just like Twitter isn't a good representation of voters, neither is DCUM.

But let's volunteer some hours to boost her!

Re: why people think she doesn’t have a chance, she seems pretty similar to Ed Lazere in politics and he got something like only 30% of the vote when he ran against Mendo, and Ed had decades of DC gov adjacent experience and allies to rely on. Honestly Erin being younger and newer on the scene could be to her advantage. I think she’ll win the Ward 4 vote, maybe even be competitive in Ward 6, but I’m wondering how she’ll do WotP, EotR, and downtown. She seems to have lots of fans in my twitter bubble but during the last election for at large I learned my twitter bubble was meaningless. I think Vincent Orange came in something like 3rd and he was like a joke in my twitter feed.

Her constituent services at the ANC level have been fantastic!

I am not in her ANC but have heard that this is true anecdotally and this is why I am voting for her. Her views don't seem to 100% align with mine (eg school opening and homeless encampments) but I get the sense that she really listens to constituents and I think that is more important than having perfect view alignment. I am sick of the politicians that give favors to certain classes only, such as developers, without taking constituent views into account. In the end I think that the legislative process should take all views into account. I am in Ward 4 and have the same view of Janeese Lewis George- I am annoyed that she voted to raise taxes on the "wealthy" so that homeless advocates could pay themselves on the back about "ending homelessness" but I think that she really listens to her constituents and introduces meaningful legislation that helps improve lives (eg her street safety bills).

I think she differs from Ed Lazare in that I think he seems more philosophically progressive but doesn't seem to have the history of providing fabulous constituent services that Erin Palmer does. Erin Palmer literally organizes an annually "Sidewalkapalooza" to push local agencies to fix sidewalk potholes. This seems like such a small thing to many but if you walk a lot, especially with kiuds/ strollers/ etc it is such a small but meaningful increase in quality of life to have something like that fixed.

Brandon Todd was a nightmare (as was Muriel before him). I don't agree with Janeese on every issue, but she cares and shows up. Brandon literally publicly harangued his constituents for criticizing Washington Gas's bungling of Eastern Avenue redevelopment project...and then immediately signed up to be a lobbyist for Washington Gas. Mendo will enjoy a fruitful lobbying career as well. Time for a change!

This is such great insight. I am aligned with Palmer on the issues and am thrilled to hear about the constituent service aspect. I don’t live in Ward 4 but donated to Janeese Lewis George’s campaign and get her newsletter, and her focus on the granular things that affect quality of life for her constituents is really impressive. If Erin Palmer brings similar energy, that would be fantastic!

I’ve never really seen myself as a “change” voter, but in this election I’m realizing how much that’s motivating my choices. Bowser and Mendelson both seem deeply entrenched, unresponsive, and focused on maintaining power more than helping people. It’s time for new perspectives, approaches, and energy.

I heard her on Kojo and she was TERRIBLE! Total lightweight. I was open to her, but compared to Mendelson, she was out of her league. That, and she doesn't want to get rid of the encampments. That's a deal breaker for me.

She seemed really nice and sincere, but not ready for primetime.

No private sector business experience at all (I do not count being a junior associate at a large law firm as being exposed to the reality of meeting a payroll). I just read through her naive and one-sided view on housing in the District. Apparently it has not occurred to her that part of the reason that landlords have difficulty maintaining buildings is that DC's absurdly one-sided tenant-friendly eviction and rent control laws make it difficult to (a) make enough money on older buildings in order to make needed capital and maintenance improvements and (b) evict tenants who trash apartments and create pest, mold and other issues which affect other units. I would like council people who are actually able to think through issues, instead of reacting to everything with knee-jerk bleeding heart liberalism.

Boo hoo, too bad for you. Rent control is popular policy in DC and is going nowhere. Nobody said you had to like it.

How are landlords supposed to keep up their properties? Seriously? The buildings aren't free. No all buildings are owned by companies.

I care more about "how are people supposed to live" than landlord profits.

That's ridiculous. If you look into any of the issues, Palmer has a detailed plan that makes sense. Mendelson just has whining and excuses that don't hold water when you really look into it. Then he likes to take credit for the things he fought against when they turn out well. Such a hack.
