Spirit Airlines

OP, there's your answer on why you shouldn't fly.

Why shouldn’t that be the case?

You get a discount at Costco by buying in bulk, you get cheaper flights via group rates.

For the same reason some states ban bars from running 2-for-1 drinks promotions during happy hour.

It is a shame that Frontier went down the drain. I used to fly with them to Colorado and they were a good carrier. Then the merged with Midwest(?) and decided to go the budget airline route and now I don't even consider them.

I wouldn't fly Spirit if you gave me the flight for free. Google the news stories about Spirit having system wide shut downs and how passengers were stuck for a week. There were fights at the customer service counters and customer service reps walked off the job. How much is your time and sanity worth? Nuff said!

I would do it if I were 18 and didn’t care if they canceled or rescheduled the flight. At this stage of my life, I would pay $1000 to fly a different airline.

I too saw $200 non stop flights from BWI to San Juan.

These days my work schedule is flexible and I don’t have to be in the office much, so I personally can handle a multi day delay. But if you can’t… go with a legacy carrier that has more resources to get you home.

But other airlines have reciprocity with their competitors. Spirit is not one of them. Your two options are stay put until they book you to get out or pay a lot of money to get a last -minute one-way ticket to your destination.

Which airline has this reciprocity you speak of? We’ve had horrible experiences with united and American and they certainly didn’t offer to book on competitors flights.

Flew them when I was 23 and swore never ever again. It does not matter how cheap they are they are just a non starter for me.

Plenty of others say the same but you do you OP

My son was just moved from Alaska Airlines to Jet Blue after missing a connection. It was a day later and he got a hotel room and a UberEATS card for food.

I’ve flown Spirit often. As long as you pay to pick your seat it’s really no worse than any other airline.

I actually liked Frontier Air. They were organized, spelled everything out, on time, and moderately comfy for a 3.5 hour flight to Mexico. Spirit was alright but not great.

A lot do. I had an American flight go mechanical failure so I asked to be put on the United flight to Dulles instead of DCA, and they endorsed the ticket and got us on for no charge.

Also had Air Canada put me on United with a mech failure, and Air China put me on Air Canada when their delay caused a missed connection.

All the airlines are terrible right now, but Spirit is the most terrible. Only take them if you can afford a significant delays and are super flexible. In my experience they cancel flights at the drop of a hat and as noted by others your rebooking options are limited to them. Also check to see how much you are really saving once you factor in all the extra fees, especially baggage (including the charge for carry-ons) and seat selection. Spirit basically runs a bus with wings. Except a bus is more reliable.

Were these recently?
We had an American cancellation and they had us wait three days before they could rebook us out. I just think you’re not really safe with any of them anymore.
