| OP here. I was just asking. So many rude and snarky replies. DCUM sucks. |
Yes, DCUM does suck but realize you’re basically “just asking” if daycare teachers deserve to get paid during a forced shutdown. People are telling you to think outside your own self-centered concerns. |
|
Our daycare does not charge us for closures due to Covid quarantines. We are at a large, non-chain center in NoVA. That has been their policy since the start of the pandemic. We just completed our 6th 10-day closure; so thankful that we haven’t had to pay for all of that lost time!
Teachers are still paid. I’m not sure how they have budgeted for that, but it has worked out so far. |
Not necessarily. When daycares first shutdown in March 2020 a friend was at a daycare that still charged them but reduced what they were paying the teachers (or stopped paying them altogether? Can’t remember the specifics). Let Me tell you, DC is NOT a good place to pull that with the number of lawyers who were parents putting a stop to it (they wanted the teachers to be paid, not to stop paying) |
I asked upthread, what does your contract say? |
Are you sure the teachers are being paid their regular salary? My little sister is a daycare teacher and they reduced her weekly salary to half when they had closures. She couldn’t afford to live on that and became a highly paid nanny! |
| Ours charges 50% rate for covid closures. This was an addendum to our original contract we signed. They sent the addendum in late 2020 or early 2021. |
How could they do that? The teachers are already close to minimum wage!! |
They said they cut the teachers hours. So they weren’t paying less per hour but the teachers had half the hours. |
No wonder childcare teachers are quitting in droves! That’s awful! |
| My daycare will refund some of the money if a classroom is closed more than 7 days in a month. |
| Nope, mine doesn’t. |
It’s not a “forced shutdown.” It’s a voluntary closure by the daycare provider. In all likelihood, the other children in the center do not meet exclusion criteria under state/location regulations, and probably don’t meet other criteria specified in the enrollment agreement for denying access to care. Strict adherence to the contract should mean you don’t pay during these closures. |
But it doesn’t. You pay or lose your spot. |
Who has mandatory quarantines for kids under 5? They’re not required in Maryland or Montgomery County. Quarantines are only required for outbreaks. Yes, many providers are refusing to meet their obligations under their enrollment agreements, but don’t blame that on the heath regulations. |
