Latin Cooper - Capitol Hill families?

Depends what you mean by easier. Basis admitted 135 5th graders, Latin II 42. Of the 135 at Basis, 46 were reserved for siblings and staff. Latin II had no sibling preference. Basis WL was 155, Basis II 192. And no one knows how many people are going to take the offered spots, but betting money is on a LOT of Basis II seats being offered off WL.

Well that was confusing.

Apples and oranges.

Many parents opt out of Basis because they want something less academically rigorous.

Assuming you mean Latin II?

I think that was the point, Dear.

I actually don't think that was the point, but ok.

Ok let’s ask this more directly. If you listed Latin 2 above basis, did you get matched with Latin 2 or basis?
Anonymous
All of the 42 kids who got matched to Latin 2 for 5th must have ranked it above Basis. Then there were probably a bunch of kids with a little bit worse lottery numbers who matched to Basis even though they ranked Latin 2 higher

My 4th grader's waitlist number for Latin 2 is twice that of their waitlist number for Basis
Anonymous
We ranked Basis last and matched at higher-ranked schools on our list, but are waitlisted for Cooper. We will take the spot if offered (live on the Hill).

Did other people rank Basis above Cooper?
Anonymous
Um, yes! Many people rank basis above Latin every year!
Anonymous
Yes - we did, and know some others who did as well. Our number would have been good enough for Cooper had we ranked it above BASIS but there were too many unknowns for us.

Yes. Basis was above Latin II and matched at Basis.

You don't understand how the lottery works!

Current Latin parent here, adding in case this is helpful. We were told this year that one of the school administrators looks at where the kids are clustered to determine the bus routes. For example, my understanding is that there used to be a Chevy Chase bus and/or stop and that was eliminated because there were not enough kids.

How so? I have an excellent understanding of how the lottery works. That "must" is based on observed results (number of slots available at the two schools this year and my own kid's and their friend's waitlist numbers). Any kids who got into the Cooper campus would have matched with Basis if they had ranked it higher. And since Basis offered so many more slots, there are kids who ended up matching with Basis even if they ranked Cooper higher.
