LAMB vs DCPS Immersion with major Tradeoffs

It's also spring break this week, so I'd expect all operations to be slow or not moving.

We matched at LAMB SD and were out of town when we got the news. I asked for an extension to submit all the enrollment document and here's what they said:

"Yes, an extension can be granted. If you are able to provide all required paperwork by Friday, April 8th, it would be greatly appreciated! Just please be aware that we are not able to approve xxx's spot until all paperwork is received. It does not mean the spot will be given away; we can not proceed with the approval on MySchoolDC."

I submitted all the paper work on April 8 and MySchoolDC hasn't been updated as of today (4/12), so they must be backed up in processing.

Did you match initially or were you on the wait list?

We matched at LAMB SD initially (our #3), and are waitlisted at two other places (I realize we won the lottery and are very grateful).

We also submitted all paperwork for LAMB (Kinsbury) on 4/5, but no updates on myschool account either.

LAMB is a really special experience. Two kids there over the last 4 years. Go there if you can.

LAMB SD is pretty great. The teachers are awesome. I would take that spot.

Lamb moved campuses, realizing that many students wouldn’t be able to attend the Kingsbury campus. They liked to us telling us that we could stay at the South Dakota campus for several years. Months later they completely reversed their decision, but claimed we would have a bus. Blaming Covid, they canceled the bus. People ask about the bus constantly, but LAMB’s position has been that they’re “exploring” it. Today they announced they’re offering free beginner spanish classes for parents. But there continues to be no money for a bus.

That pretty clearly shows their priorities. I wouldn’t choose lamb.

Any school that flagrantly defies both science and public health experts is suspect.

Truly, whatever LAMB says they are going to do in the future, don’t believe it for one second. LAMB may have once been special but I can no longer understand the appeal. Plus it’s got a truly toxic minority of parents who make participating fairly intolerable.

I get that some people are (rightly!!) upset with the administration re: SD location moving and the bus situation, but can anyone speak to how it's been for their children? How are academics? Are your kids happy at LAMB? Are they learning? Are they enjoying school? What is teacher turnover like, etc? Thanks!

The teachers are the only reason we stay, but honestly....my kids don't profess happiness at the school. The only assessments I have of my children improving are in reading, Spanish, and math. In reading and Spanish, yes, the kids are improving. In math, no, they are not. I wouldn't call it a welcoming or joyful place. The opposite, in fact. Of course, as a parent I haven't been allowed in the school for the past two school years so who knows what's actually happening.

Teacher turnover: I don't know what it is overall (I think that's in the school report card data?) but we've had one teacher leave mid-year last year (right at the time that vaccines were required, so who knows).

Also, the SD location lies are not the only thing that the admin has misled people on. The most pronounced issue is what they did through the school closures. They would say one thing, then change it with no explanation, repeatedly. We were constantly jerked around. Right now they keep talking about sending out updated guidance about masks (we still have indoor masking), but every week they say they'll report something and then don't. This kind of communication is pretty standard for LAMB. It seems to either be incompetence or a deliberate choice to see if they can just gain acceptance through exhaustion.

The admin and Board are 100% throughout trash. They lie to parents, treat us like garbage, beg for money and change their mind on a dime. There seems to be a lot of administrators which is odd Bc they’re always saying how short staffed they are. The bus thing for example is really shocking. I’m surprised some parents didn’t go to the media to discuss how they were treated.

The teachers have been wonderful for my kids who love their school. I don’t know how they find these amazing teachers and I honestly pray they won’t leave due to the clown show administration. One of my kids has special education needs and they are getting what they need which is way more than I can say about dcps.

The biggest reason for lamb’s poor admin has to be that they keep promoting from within. So these people have never worked in this capacity before and are just literally guessing. Current dean of students was a special Ed teacher who worked with my kid. Now she somehow promoted herself to Dean. Hopefully she’ll find competence one day.

This. I can’t believe you’re even debating this.

I have a kid in Upper El (4/5) and another in Lower El (1/2/3) and we've had a very good experience. We started at the SD campus where we were told as an admitted family (before even attending) that the SD campus was temporary and would close (we were actually told it would close sooner than it did). We've seen some teacher turnover but each of my kids have had at least one teacher (sometimes two) that stayed through the entire Montessori cycle (meaning there was stability over the three-year cycle). We've had experience with extra services that the school provides and have generally been pleased (we would have liked more, but in general found that it was helpful for our kid). We've also been pleased with how happy the kids are (both in school and in the aftercare program). One kid is quite advanced and the teachers have done a good job giving that child advanced lessons.

I'm not in the PTO and not particularly involved. We've seen a lot in our time and our view is that there are very loud parents on both ends of the spectrum - who love and who hate the school. I wouldn't put us on either end, but we've had a good experience and are glad we go to school there (though certainly have no illusions that it's perfect or anywhere close to it).

There is one anti-LAMB troll who posts a bunch in all of the LAMB threads. Those posts are all probably the same person.

Teachers tend to stay. There are some very experienced great teachers at the SD location. Children seem to be very happy and they really emphasize kindness at the school.
