Does your Deal 6th grader ever have homework?

Meant to say my HS son

I also have a 6th grader at a different middle school, and it's the same. Only needs to spend a little bit of time on math or reading and not every day of the week. My second grader has more homework.

PPP here. And its not because there isn't a decent amount of homework, its that my kid gets it done during study hall/commuting/end of classes. It's probably 1-2 hours of work a day, but he's choosing to do it at school, not at home.

The level of HW in 6th seems reasonable to me. If you are curious what is being assigned across teams, you can always check out the links to the team-specific newsletters that are provided in the weekly email.

My student seems to have weekly math HW, as well as one or two assignments per week in science and geography. Plenty in Spanish as well. ELA seems to be done largely in class (except reading). Sometimes the HW can be done quickly, and my kid is learning to budget time well during study block-- that has improved a lot over the year and I think is good from a habit-forming perspective. My kid seems to spend a decent amount of time at home studying for tests and quizzes-- not sure if you consider that "homework" but it is something that we budget time for. Hope this helps.

Idk, they get an average amount. But there are plenty of studies showing how too much homework does not actually boost academic achievement.

Also your child may not be doing it lol. It’s often optional for kids who need that kind of support. (At my school)

Yes too much homework like 3 hours is not good. But moderation like an hour does help establish skills.

In the past, homework was mandatory and a percentage of your grade. Now with all this lowering of standards in regards to it being optional, or you don’t have to turn it in at the deadline, etc. because districts don’t want to further ding the kids who don’t care or take it seriously, homework has gone by the wayside.

It’s too bad because these kids will find out fast enough in college or real life that there are few second chances.

A myth if there ever was one.

I agree with you. Homework is largely busy work and pointless es0ecially in younger grades. 6th graders should get to come home and just be kids.

These are the type of parents who want to ban the SAT and ACT or any type of standardized test due to equity.
