Does your Deal 6th grader ever have homework?

6th grader DS at Deal very rarely has homework. He generally has no daily homework, just occasional online language homework and once a week math homework, and rare project-based homework. For a while I was worried that he just wasn't telling us about his homework, but we keep an eye on his work in Aspen and he's not missing anything. Our 3rd grader actually has more homework than our 6th grader!

Are other Deal parents noticing this too? Is this normal? Before he headed to middle school, we had warned our DS to expect increased homework but that obviously hasn't turned out to be the case.

I have a 6th grader at a different middle school, but I know he gets most of his homework done at school or on the ride home. So may be the case for yours.

There's another thread active in DCUM that asked whether the workload and rigor at BASIS was really any more advanced/aggressive than Deal. Maybe they should look at this thread.

My 6th grader has some homework. My 8th grader has had progressively more each year. The difference in our household right now is noticeable.

I also have a 6th grader at a different middle school, and it's the same. Only needs to spend a little bit of time on math or reading and not every day of the week. My second grader has more homework.

And why is no homework a problem? Unless it's actual work as opposed to BS worksheets, who cares?

No a current 6th grade parent but a Deal parent here. Our child occasionally has work to do at home but not often. They say that they have study block to get work done and only have homework if they can't get their work done in class. There are also occasional projects that they spend time on, as well, but nothing onerous.

I tutor several 6th graders at Deal from different teams and they always have hw, at least in math

Yes and it's mostly worksheets. DD did have a presentation to go over a few times.

It helps reinforces what kids learn. It can augment what they learned in class. It helps to develop organizational and time management skills. It helps to develop discipline and good study habits. It helps develop and strengthen executive functioning skills. It helps the kids take accountability and responsibility for work and deadlines. It helps to develop the skills needed and set the stage for high school.

It is wild to me that 6th graders don't have homework and decreases my confidence in DCPS... By 6th grade my regular homework included reading multiple chapters of books, writing analystical essays, math problems out of the book...almost every night. I don't understand this.

I agree with you. Homework is largely busy work and pointless es0ecially in younger grades. 6th graders should get to come home and just be kids.

I have a 6th grader at Deal and they get a reasonable amount of homework. Not everything is daily - some classes have weekly assignments. Plus studying for tests and quizzes.

Do you check their team newsletter? That tells you what to expect in the upcoming week.

My Deal 6th grader typically has a not overwhelming amount of homework, but there is usually some.

I think it picks up as you go up grades. But with that said, my HS hardly ever had homework at Deal because he did it on the bus home.
