For those that went to MoCo from DC, what grade?

While I heard Key is pretty good we just had no interest in starting in a place we had no intentions of finishing. Quite happy with our elementary but our oldest is going to Pyle next year and I have heard mixed things about it so we shale see but it should be better than Hardy.

PP. you moved for no reason. I know graduates of and current students at both Hardy and Pyle, including several that are now old enough to be in college. The kids who went to both schools turned out fine. Hardy - like Wilson, and like Deal - is at least the equal of the middle and high schools in MoCo.

Backdoor private recruiting again. They must be really worried about the covid cohort going back to MCPS.

Completely the opposite experience. Was way behind in math from DCPS in 2nd grade. Caught up in time for Highly gifted program and TPMS magnet in MCPS. If we had waited any longer to move, it would not have worked out.

So did you move at that time specifically because of your concern about the math, or another reason?

We moved for a different reason, not for schools. Honestly, I did not realize how far behind DS was until we got to MCPS. It was night and day for us. I guess everyone has different experiences, but for a math kid, we are pretty grateful to have made the move.

We moved from a different school system to MCPS and my recommendation is to do it by late elementary school - at the latest. Middle school is tough and give your kids a couple of years to form some friendships - even one or two - before jumping into middle school. Academics are a whole other layer to that equation but in that regard, too, late EA gives you a chance to get your DC up to speed academically.

The same old same old... Can't blame them for trying I guess.

We moved from our JKLMM elementary to MCPS (close in) in the middle of the year when DD was in 5th and DS was in 3rd. Reasons were that we were renting and felt that the rising housing prices of NWDC were not worth it (several friends had neighbors build additions that really altered their privacy/views etc and IMO probably property values). Simultaneously, we felt our kids needed academic enrichment opportunities and DCPS didn’t have anything for gifted kids. We were able to have them take the test to get into the relevant enrichment programs when we moved. While we moved mid-school year, we paid “out of state tuition” to DCPS so the they could finish the year with their friends—particularly important for DD at the time, we felt.
No regrets whatsoever. I miss many things about our former community but many other parents had already bought their homes during a (relatively) lower point in the market, and they weren’t seeking academic enrichment for their kids in the same way we were.

If you think your kids might have a shot at enriched programs (CES for elementary, Magnets for middle & high school), I'd advise moving before the evaluation points for those - so, 3rd, 5th, or 8th grade. The processes keep changing, so there's no guarantee on exactly what the data points will be or when they'll be considered, but I think in general high school is done earliest, followed by middle and then elementary. The earlier you're in the system, the better chance you have to have enough data to be evaluated.

CES commutes are tolerable from most locations but commutes to TPMS and Eastern can be deal breakers.

LOL. We can tell you're lying.

MCPS absolutely sucks right now. Visit a few ES and then go see Murch, Lafayette, Janey etc. Those schools are beautiful and the compete for students!! MCPS knows you have no choice, are trapped and they don’t care.

CES and other magnets are lotteries now. so don’t count on that.

TPMS was super convenient for us. It was a 10-15 minute bus ride from where we live in Chevy Chase.

Yeah MCPS sucks but ya'll still can't compete with it.

Moved when my DS started 3rd and DD started 8th. DS made it into lottery for CES but not selected. They were both in charters in DC. Seem happier in their new schools.

Did your student bus to Blair and then transfer bus to TPMS? That's what happens if you are Pyle or further NW.

So then maybe MCPS doesn’t actually suck…
