I'm in DC and think that DC is fine for the younger grades of elementary school, but having looked at the options for MS and HS, there seem to be few options that I'd be willing to send my child to. I know I'm not alone in this, as I've talked with neighborhood parents, looked at test scores, otherwise did my homework. That's also taking into account special needs of my own child, that I'm not going to disclose. A majority of the options in DC are charters and must be lottery-ed into as well, so that provides no certainty.
My question is: for those of you in MCPS that came from DC for the schools, at what grade did you move, and why? |
Most bail out around MS, but we made the jump way before that. |
| We didn't move for the schools, but did DCPS to MCPS in K, 2nd and 6th grade. We soon realized how horrible MCPS is and didn't even finish elementary before we bailed for privates. We had a MUCH better experience at DCPS. |
Which DCPS? And which MCPS? I don't have the $ for private, so that's out for me. Deal/Wilson would be the only non-charter DCPS that I would be willing to do, but reading the DCPS threads on those schools make them seem....uh....less than ideal. |

We did 2 years of DCPS for PK and then moved out here for K. We needed more room and didn't want to have to deal with lotteries.
We will move back to the city as soon as our kids are out of the house. We are here entirely for the schools--really miss where we used to live. |
Completely the opposite experience. Was way behind in math from DCPS in 2nd grade. Caught up in time for Highly gifted program and TPMS magnet in MCPS. If we had waited any longer to move, it would not have worked out. |
LOL. We can tell you're lying. |
Yep, it's easy to spot the private school parent. They just love our forum |
So did you move at that time specifically because of your concern about the math, or another reason? |
We moved for 5th and 2nd grade from a DC charter. The curriculum at that point for math was several grade levels ahead at their DC charter. Both my kids were bored. They subsequently got into the CES (younger one) and magnet program at TPMS (older one) and are finding it very easy. They got a truly great foundation at their old school. Socially it’s been harder for the one who joined in 5th. The schools are really big and it’s been harder than expected to make neighborhood friends. We moved because we needed a better middle school option. |
From which charter did you move? |
We did it at 3rd and K and couldn't be happier with MCPS. The youngest is now at TPMS and the oldest is at Blair SMCS. There are a lot of great opportunities for anyone who is interested in MCPS between things like the CES and magnets. Although parents who expect the school to raise their children are often unhappy. |
This. So many different programs for different needs. |
| We did it at 4th and 1st. Worked fine for 1st grader but for 4th grader would have been easier merging into group to have moved in 3rd. We moved for steadier school system. If you have strong students and they make it through the lottery, MS magnets work for some, our DCs had that option but chose to stay in base MS rather than do a long commute. |
| We moved from the Palisades to Whitman cluster the year before Kindergarten. While I heard Key is pretty good we just had no interest in starting in a place we had no intentions of finishing. Quite happy with our elementary but our oldest is going to Pyle next year and I have heard mixed things about it so we shale see but it should be better than Hardy. |
