UVA with Jefferson Scholarship vs Harvard

Never heard of the Jefferson scholarship, but I have certainly heard of Harvard. As has everyone all around the world.

I'd take Harvard unless it would be impossible financially.

If they are smart enough to get a Jefferson Scholarship, bank the money and pay for an MBA at Harvard.

It’s a full ride to UVa

Definitely Jefferson Scholarship! That’s a big deal and your child will have a lot of extra attention and opportunities. Congratulations!

Full ride plus a large stipend plus plus funding for unpaid internships plus funded study abroad over your junior year summer

Best way to demonstrate your financial skills for a future finance grad is to make this decision.

I see that some would take this route. I would take out any amount of loan and eats rice & beans for 4 years to get my DC to Harvard. If your kid has won the golden ticket, for the love of god, take it.

I would never do this.

DD got into some top SLACs, but she's going to our flagship. If she'd gotten into Harvard, I'd pat her on the back, frame the letter, and send her to our flagship. Not worth the money for very smart kids like DD who will succeed anywhere.

OP, I'd choose UVA, unless I had a far larger income or millions in non-retirement savings.

Jefferson Scholar. Love Brown but it doesn’t impress everyone. Some people hate Brown oddly enough. Anyway there’s a bias against it. Plus a Jef Scholar is so much more than 4 year undergrad. Now if choice is JeffScholar or Harvard, I’d say Harvard because well it’s Harvard

Have a friend who had exactly this choice—and Brown had been their dream school forever—and went with UVA. Then med school…but with no loans because of money saved from undergrad.

If the $300K+ matters, then UVa is by far the better option. If it doesn't (lucky you), then make a list of personal pluses and minuses of each school and decide based on the results of that exercise.

Big city important? Harvard

Proximity to the great outdoors? UVa

Which school has more classes you're excited about in your major?

At which school are you more likely to be able to play in the marching band?

Which has the better living options for you?

Etc.

+1

You would have to put Jefferson Scholarship on your resume for the rest of your life, and always preface your alma mater with explanation of Jefferson Scholarship.

Harvard is very generous with FA. See if you can get some aid.

I wouldn't want to work anywhere that opened its doors simply because I went to Harvard. That kind of superficial decision-making can't possibly lead to the best team possible.

NP. Extremely unlikely the FA decision will change now.
