We prefer to hire state college grads over Ivy. We've learned they are simply better on the job. If presented with a resume from UVA and a resume from Harvard and everything else was the same we would hire the UVA grad. |
UVA Business is not guranteed

I'm the 12:35 poster.
I've known a number of Ivy grads that ended up working jobs that you could have had with community college or state flagship. |
I would take Harvard but only you can evaluate the cost. |
No FA. |
Our family would definitely do UVA in this case. But we are not loaded. And Harvard has no strong appeal for us. Even if we had 300k laying around, it would probably do better in the long run to invest it. |
So if a poor kid got full FA from an Ivy and went there, you’d just disregard them? Wow. |
Definitely UVA. Brown is not that big of a deal to justify turning down such a prestigious package. |
Honestly, as someone who does alot of hiring, I am going to all the UVA grad before the Harvard grad. There is a certain degree of stigma that comes with the Harvard name on a resume not the least of which is that they will think they are too good for your job etc etc. It's just kind of snooty and pretentious. That being said, I have hired alot of them into more of a consulting kind of role since they seem to prefer to tell others how to do the work than actually do the work themselves. Just my impression of course. I'm more impressed by the Ivy grad school personally than undergrad. |
You mean phD, right? Because I’ve got news for you, most Ivy master’s degrees are straight up cash cows. See the Columbia Film or University of Southern California Master of Social Work (not an Ivy obviously) debacles. |
Sorry, but what is Mcintire? |
Harvard awards aid based on need. Whatever OP has been offered is all they are going to get. (FWIW, UVA also awards aid according to need; the Jefferson Scholarship is a merit award given by a foundation, not the university.) |
I went to Boston College and Harvard.
Going to Harvard for a shorter graduate degree was a great call. For much less $$ it is at the top of my resume, which helps a lot with consulting jobs. I almost always get an interview because people wonder what I am all about. It is like the academic equivalent of being a super model-people are curious and wonder if there is substance. IN BOSTON, people would skip Harvard on the resume, and tell me how much THEY loved BC. Their brother went there, their uncle was a triple eagle, etc., so THAT was the ice breaker, and I had to prove I was not pretentious. I think your kid should go to UVA, if they want to, and I assume they will be successful there. Harvard would love to have them when they know exactly what they want to be, and it is a great place to learn as an adult. However, please let them decide, and support them either way. You have 2 excellent choices. CONGRATS TO YOUR KID FOR WORKING SO HARD!!! |
My friend from UVa got into Harvard where his biological dad was an alum. He went to UVa because he believed he got there on his own. He ended up leaving his <$50K (below average) job and working for his mother within a month. His UVa girlfriend dumped him that week and he didn't have sex for 6 years. At UVa, they will succeed working for his mother, not anywhere else. Similar story with Harvard Law alum graduating with no friends and oodles of debt and incurring more by losing elections and burning bridges. Never heard this with Harvard undergrads though. DC should do Harvard undergrad and UVa Law. |
