Sumo Orange PSA

Anonymous
I spent $4.50 on a single sumo orange yesterday to see what all the hype is about and I’m not impressed. It tastes like, I don’t know, an orange?

My dd tried one today and said it tastes just like a clementine, but larger. She loves oranges.

Nalls Produce in Alexandria has them. Not sure how much.

We bought sump oranges and they are not juicy and sour? Is the season over?

They vary just like every other fruit.

They were on sale at Giant yesterday too, similar price and lowest I have seen. I tried Sumos in the past and was not impressed, but the bag I got this weekend was exceptional. Sweet like Halos, but meaty like a real orange. I loved them.

When they were first introduced, they were really good. As the PP said, very sweet, and meaty like a real orange. I guess as demand has gone up, the quality has gone down. I only bought one box this year. Wasn't worth paying 16 bucks for them.

Not a sams member. Anyone know if Trader Joe’s does?

Yes. I saw some yesterday at the Trader Joe’s north of downtown Bethesda.

They are around $5 for a bag of 4-5 at Trader Joe’s. Seems fine to me. I didn’t know they were such a hot item. I would never buy them for $4 each

Apparently it’s not a great year for them. I loved them last year!

They are definitely not as good this season. I think they expanded too much and are selling lower quality product. The ones in a bag tend to be smaller than ones you can buy for more money individually. Disappointing.

TJs had the bag for sale at Baileys Crossroads this morning. The first bag I bought was life changing, then the second was dried out and a waste of money. We’ll see with this 3rd bag.

Honestly, the best citrus I have had in the last year were the box of satsumas (like clementines) sold by the Washington Liberty HS band. I wish I could get them regularly.

oh- I thought it was just me- they just arent as good this year and the season used to be 2 months max- never could find them after mid January. I'd take the shorter season and better fruit. The pink cara cara have been very good this year. The rind of teh sumos is thicker and waxier too- much harder to peel than they used to be. It's disappointing - seems this happens with every fruit, it gets super popular and then drops in quality.

Honey crisps are totally worth it- specially since Macintosh have become so so mushy and organic Granny Smith arent as sour as conventional. Unless you can get orchard apples, honey crisps are the best grocery store apples. BUT stone fruit season is coming so WOOHOO! should have apricots in a few weeks!

Where have you found them? I used to find them at Costco, but the one bag I got wasn't really good, and I haven't seen it since.
