| Whatever, as long as suburban school children no longer have to hear that Jim Crow was bad, it's all ok |
Doing your part to make discourse impossible, I see. |
What on Earth is there to talk about? He campaigned on banning something that isn't taught in public schools, avoided hard questions (any questions), the media normalized him, he wore a red sweater vest, and now you have a MAGA-wannabe administration in purple/blue Virginia with a divided legislature. You guys wanted Youngkin, you got him, and now nothing will get done between legal battles and culture wars. A lot of us said this would end poorly and here we are. Executive orders and retaliatory firing. |
| It should be noted that Tim Heaphy wrote the detailed independent review for the City of Charlottesville following the 2017 white supremacist rally. Did that also influence Miyares' firing of him? |
Says the spoon. He's taken a leave of absence for the better part of a year and no one has missed him. Why is UVA still paying him? |

His job is to be a law professor. Not to be on leave tilting at windmills.
Fire his a$$. |
Um, no, his job was to be counsel to the University, not to be a law professor. Try reading the article if you want anyone to take you seriously. |
| As the parent of a new UVA student, I naively thought that state government had minimal or no control over firings/hiring at state universities/colleges. Apparently the new AG also fired the counsel for GMU. This should be of concern to any parent of students at these institutions who is paying attention. |
Oh, please. Every incoming administration hires and fires at will. This is nothing new, though of course you twits will be outraged by every decision this administration makes - even though every administration prior has hand-selected their own people. Deal with it. “The decision had nothing to do with the January 6th committee or their investigations. It is common practice for an incoming administration to appoint new staff that share the philosophical and legal approach of the Attorney General. Every counsel serves at the pleasure of the Attorney General," she said. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/virginia-s-new-republican-ag-fires-lawyer-working-jan-6-n1287912 |
DP. No, it's not common practice to fire university lawyers. That's a nice quote but it doesn't apply to state schools. It's bizarre, tbh. |

In Virginia, the attorney general oversees general counsel at colleges and universities that make up the state’s public higher education system, according to the Times.
In a statement to the Associated Press on Monday, LaCivita said Heaphy had been a “controversial” hire and the “decision was made after reviewing the legal decisions made over the last couple of years.” LaCivita told the Times that the attorney general wants the advice of the general counsel to be based on law and not the university’s philosophy. “The decision had nothing to do with the Jan. 6 committee or their investigations,” LaCivita said. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/01/24/republican-virginia-attorney-general-fires-january-6-investigator-from-university.html |
Utter bullshit. University counsel have absolutely nothing to do with the "philosophical and legal approach of the Attorney General." I'm sure this will end up with a wrongful termination lawsuit. |
It’s if no concern. These positions answer to the AG. Just like with any other type of “at will” position to the AG, the AG gets to clean house and replace with like-minded individuals. The Dems do the same when they take office. Same thing happens at the federal level when a new party comes into power. |
Utter bullshit right back atcha. Responsibilites of the Atty. General include providing legal representation to state universities. Deal with it. Provide legal advice and representation to the Governor and executive agencies, state boards and commissions, and institutions of higher education. https://www.oag.state.va.us/our-office/about-the-office#responsibilities |
+1 How many times, and on how many threads, must this be repeated? First the outrage and lies about "the entire Civil Rights division of VA" being fired - turns out, only a few positions were let go and there is still very much a Civil Rights division. Then calling VA the "anti-voting" state because of common sense voting laws. Seems DCUM is the place to go for the anti-Youngkin trolls to spew their lies. |
