I’m not even fully opposed to dropping them (last spring in person we arguably didn’t need them) but not in the height of omicron.

I think kids who don’t wear masks should be disciplined and if the new administration tries to challenge it you take them to court where they will lose.

Peer pressure is also a big thing for teens. Most kids are pro-mask so the ones who take them off will be ostracized. That may help.

Most kids aren’t pro mask. Not even close. I teach teenagers every day, I know very well their mask adherence. And I stand by my comment, if they are allowed, 50% will immediately remove them. Then as time goes on and that becomes normalized another 20-30% will slowly take theirs off too. By school year end I would wager only 10-20% would still be willingly and diligently wearing them if they’re not required.

They won’t be taking them off if they are ordered by the school to keep them on.

The new governor’s executive order has no teeth. Schools will continue to mandate masks at least during this surge and anyone who says Youngkin says I don’t have to wear one will be sent home. I know someone will go wining to Tucker about it but he doesn’t care anymore — they are working on whatever boogeyman they can create for the midterms and don’t care about northern Virginia schools anymore. Miyares can try to sue on a student’s behalf but it will be laughed out of court and he will have wasted political capital. I see mask use in place until Spring Break.

I have also told my kids they are to instruct their peers who remove masks that they are to put them back on.

Why does the EO have less teeth than the last governor's EO? Because you don't like it? Your kids won't have many friends.

Mainly because the other EO was aligned with local policy. In this instance, they may be in conflict. The first kid who refuses to follow a school rule and says it’s because Governor Youngkin says I don’t have to wear a mask and my parents opted me out can and will be disciplined because you can’t choose what school rules you want to follow. So if a school system or a principal or even a teacher says you will wear masks in this/these school(s) and a kid doesn’t comply, look for them to be disciplined just as if they broke any school rule.

The current EO could be in conflict with SB 1303 which requires districts to provide “in-person instruction and provide such in-person instruction in a manner in which it adheres, to the maximum extent practicable, to any currently applicable mitigation strategies for early childhood care and education programs and elementary and secondary schools to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 that have been provided by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention”.

Can I tell you how much I love that this is a Republican bill? The VA GOP needs an evil mastermind like McConnell and they don’t have one.

Teacher again. I truly don’t know whether local control can supersede parent choice if a mandate is lifted but remains in place in schools. I suspect it can. I have no control. I’ll listen to what my principal tells us. If they’re still mandated and that has teeth I will enforce and if the school district mandate has no teeth I won’t. I am not devoting my life to this GD issue.

Well it’s not practical to adhere to Cdc because the EO says you cant!

The other EO was not aligned to local policy in 3/4 of the state.

Coach athletics for LCPS (masks are not required) and I agree with this.

I assume you’re trolling or something, but if not you should go see how many kids are wearing masks in PE right now (and how many kids are in the gym during secondary PE). Chances are regardless of what you tell your kids they’ve made up their own minds about what to do at school anyway.

The state constitution supersedes a state statute, which supersedes an EO. A state statute that is specific also takes precedence over the EO's reference to the unenumerated, vague language in a different state statute. A state statute and EO are subject to judicial review, both in state or federal court. Tennessee had a similar EO. It was challenged in federal court and school districts offering an opt-out were enjoined from implementing them because they infringed on the Constitutionally-protected rights of students with disabilities. Tennessee's state legislature has since passed statewide bans on mask and vaccine mandates but the injunction still holds in Shelby County. The Virginia state senate is still Dem-controlled so a statewide ban will not be happening anytime soon.

They have been required indoors. And it was athletics who was responsible for the all the outbreaks last spring - you guys were terrible at following the rules! 10-15 close contacts per single case?

Why has LCPS not said anything at all? Even our principal (didn't know he was an idiot but now I guess I do) seems to think the EO takes effect tomorrow. LCPS needs to clarify and pronto.

No. They’re required for those who are “not actively involved” in the practice or athletic event. I personally wear a KN95 the entire time, but I am agreeing with the teacher above that when it’s not required many of the kids don’t wear them.

The special exceptions given to athletes is gross. Like back when we couldn't have school but they still got their season? What a joke.

Ziegler did send an email. It’s still in effect.

I’m also a teacher and one concern I have is if we enforce the school policy of masking, because that’s what our administrators tell us to do, a parent could complain to the state that we are violating the EO. The EO specifically states that no teacher will be allowed to require a student to mask. Would the state then go after the teacher for enforcing school district policy?

This is also the policy in general PE from my observations.
