MV calculus vs linear algebra

Statistics is a required class for many majors. For example, I have a finance degree and a minor in econ and it was required fir both.

DC liked algebra much more than he does calculus and has no intent to major in math or engineering. DC may also take AP Stat but feels if stat is his only math it will look like he’s stepping down in challenge after bc calculus.

His high school recommends MV calculus after Calc BC, and then linear algebra after that. Is there a reason for this from the perspective of necessary background? Could DC take linear algebra next year instead of mv calculus?

Surprised, as calculus as taught in high school is almost all exclusively lots of algebra... that said he shouldn't take AP stats unless he's interested in it. It likely isn't taught very well focusing on understanding, so he may not get too much out of it, unless they do a good with probability theory, which is the underpinning of how/why statistics works.

Given you said he's not interested in math or engineering, stats would likely be the easiest choice, with the downside that it doesn't look as good on a transcript due to a watered down reputation. Linear algebra on the other hand would look great, and if taught well, can be a gateway to pure math. It's also extremely useful in general in computer science.

If the school is recommending MV calculus and then linear algebra for a senior - are these one semester courses? I had always thought these were one year courses. (For that matter, is AP statistics a one year course or one semester?)

MV and Linear algebra have been one year courses at my kids' mcps high school (they graduated so not sure if it is currently the same). As is statistics. The pathway would be: grade 10 calculus, grade 11 MV, grade 12 linear/diff eq.
