Surprised, as calculus as taught in high school is almost all exclusively lots of algebra... that said he shouldn't take AP stats unless he's interested in it. It likely isn't taught very well focusing on understanding, so he may not get too much out of it, unless they do a good with probability theory, which is the underpinning of how/why statistics works.

Given you said he's not interested in math or engineering, stats would likely be the easiest choice, with the downside that it doesn't look as good on a transcript due to a watered down reputation. Linear algebra on the other hand would look great, and if taught well, can be a gateway to pure math. It's also extremely useful in general in computer science.
