What kind of relationship did you think you needed? Are you looking to pick a fight with the teacher/school? What exactly do you want, OP? |
+1, it’s called realistic fiction for a reason. I assigned a book in 6th grade and one of the 4 main characters was being bullied. There were two bad words in the book that were said during these events. Some students mentioned it to me and we discussed “real life” and events that occur even in school. They had all heard those words and worse with families and friends. They all loved the book, they empathized with the bullied character and how his friends were trying to support him…it’s realistic. |
This. They're going to encounter other words in their life, be it in books or elsewhere. Good time to parent and explain them. |
Get ready for when your kid reads Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer! |
+1 million. |
They have sanitized versions of both books now |
Yeah I have no idea why you wouldn’t ask the teacher. If you’re going straight to admin you’re just looking to get the teacher in trouble. The teacher assigned the book so she knows it has the word retard in it. Im sure she chose the book to have a teaching moment about bullying, words have meaning, etc. If you talk to the teacher you might find out what’s going on. But if you want to be a knee jerk omg my kid read a book that may make him think parent just go straight to Facebook and flame the teacher. |
Time to establish 5hat kind of relationship. If you have concerns you need to be assertive about expressing them so you can participate in your child’s education. I can’t fathom a teacher not addressing that language in the context of a discussion, but stranger 5hings have happened, so ASK. |
For all the dummies who don’t understand Twain’s message? What’s the point of even reading the books? |
Thanks all. I googled the book and found a small town in tx that banned it. I am the opposite of that spectrum. I just chopped it up to being like the racist a$$ skippyjon jones books in the schools library. I Told kid to never use the words. |
Ps I’ve read both the terupt box and the skippjon books |
I agree with you about the concern for the usage of this word in that context, however books and media sometimes portray bad things that we wouldn’t want to happen or wouldn’t agree with. I think this is an opportunity for you to address these topics with your child. I’m glad you are reviewing the reading material with your child. Here is a resource with some tips:

Public stink? It’s a word in a book. No one cares. Complaining about words in books is terrible and makes you are truly bad person. |
How unfortunate |
+1 Education should make a child aware of the good, bad, beautiful, and ugliness of life. That's reality. It also allows someone to think for themselves and gain a greater understanding of what is right, wrong, acceptable, and unacceptable. Sanitizing learning materials like old books can distort a child's perception of reality. At the end of the day, only the child loses. |
