4 grader is read Because if Mr Terupt. The book uses the word retard a few times in reference to a kid with down syndrome.
Seems like teacher should address the word. Who can I contact to address?

Still. That's where you start with this type of concern -- you speak with or email the teacher. Explain your concern with the word and ask how the teacher planned to address it in class.

If you don't get a satisfactory answer, you move up the chain to the principal.

I think you’re probably assuming an awful lot, and missing the point. Have you read the book? My daughter did, and she hated the way that student was treated. It’s a fabulous book.

Also- why can’t you say something to your kid about it? Maybe have him bring it up in class. “My mom and I were talking about how that isn’t a nice word…”

I wouldn’t bother them with this. It’s just not a big deal. Address it with your child yourself if you think the meaning will be lost on him or her, and find something better to do with your time.

Why is this trivial matter worthy of its own thread?

np Do you live in the real world? Books are supposed to show how we actually live. If you haven't already noticed people aren't always nice. Why would you expect authors not to write what actually happens? Perhaps kids who do use those words there can be a discussion of how "not nice" they are. Censorship is not the answer. I suppose you wouldn't want your kid to read Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer, eh?

How do you know she hasn’t? Did you address it?

I would guess that the Teacher is addressing the use of the word and the treatment of the character. You can email the Teacher and ask if you would like.

Teachers don’t have enough s—t to deal with right now. I’m sure he or she will be happy to explain their instructional choices to you.

If you don’t have a relationship with the teacher, start one. That’s on you. Do you want the teacher to discuss the offensive word in class or do you just want the teacher to be punished and to make a big public stink about it? ALWAYS talk to the teacher first.

+1 Well said, PP. IMO the OP is a teacher basher trying to fuel the flames of other threads.

Use it as a teaching moment to your kid. Tell them about the word.
