And I ended up in a good place BMI was 21. Second kid gained way less but never lost the baby weight at all and ended up with BMI 24.5. I’m on #3 and I’m in my 40’s now. I really need a strategy. I want to breast feed and while I did with two kids, I never had an over supply and struggled to keep up a bit. I also know that my most successful time will be when I’m on maternity leave. For those who were successful with losing weight and breastfeeding, what did you do? I know the first step is not to gain too much weight and so far I’ve been doing ok. I’m walking and doing the Beachbody prenatal barre 2x per week. Another note - I can’t run anymore (post pregnancy) due to foot and hip injuries. Would love some advice because I feel like I’m on a trajectory to be overweight after this.

How old is your baby now? Honestly, I would take it easy on yourself. Give yourself time to heal and deal with 3 kids before trying to lose weight. There is a time for everything and this isn't the time if your baby is a newborn.

OP here - gained a ton = 67lbs
My 2nd baby is almost 6 years old
And BMI is probably a semi-decent measure for me. I work out some, but I’m by no means muscular.

I’m still pregnant. I’m just thinking I want to plan strategy now to maybe make freezer meals or meal plans etc. I’m going to be having a c-section so I will focus on diet first. I’ll have 4 months of leave so that will likely be my best time to do anything. Between a pretty intense job and taking kids to activities etc, I highly doubt I’ll have a lot of time to do anything. That’s why I’m here with a 5 year old and have never lost the baby weight.

How long did it take?

The better part of a year.

In your position I would focus on getting the 5 year old confidently biking summer 2022 then summer of 2023 you can bike with baby in a bikeseat and kiddo in his/her own bike. There are bike towing options for older kids too. Find a biking trail with no car traffic. You will burn tons of calories moving humans through space and you should be spending time with your kids outdoors anyway. Find "residual" ways to exercise, like walking to the park and errands. Get a stroller with one of those foot platform for the elder kid when they start getting tired. Try to not get too de-conditioned this pregnancy. You will be digging yourself out of a deeper hole. Even walking 30 minutes a day is way better than being profoundly sedentary. Take the first 6 weeks off. Only gentle walks.

It is not “loose” weight. I’m sorry, this one is really aggravating even if it’s pedantic to point it out. Argh!

I lost all my baby weight and inched doing this program. I have PCOS too, can’t recommend it enough.

Seems very vague. What’s so great about it?

I gained 50 lbs. with my second and also breastfed for 4 years, so I know the struggle. Don't kill yourself with crazy extreme diets. I cut refined sugar and white carbs completely, also wheat and had a little bit of brown rice once a week. I waked everywhere with DC2, we'd do 5 miles daily in the carrier. Check with your doctor, but for me these were great.

It teaches you how to plan and cook meals geared towards female fat loss. No more diets or restrictive eating. I’m eating more and have stayed motivated.

You can't plan to lose all your weight 4 months postpartum and them go back to a lifestyle that doesn't allow you to be healthy. What habits led you to gain 67 lbs your first pregnancy? You need to find a way to eat healthy and exercise long term, not just try to cut as much weight as possible on maternity leave.

Gained 25, lost 15 immediately that first month. Final 10 pounds took 3 months. WTF?? I upped my exercise and it finally came off. No change in diet which has always been good. I am only 5'2" so 10 pounds is very noticeable. Ski season helped.

Losing weight and maintaining are two different things.

Breastfeeding made it harder for me to lose weight (but I'm borderline underweight to begin with). You may want to rethink it long-term if this is important to you, or combo feed or only do it for a limited time (the newborn period, etc.). Hormones throw a wrench in the process, and breastfeeding makes your body hold onto fat.

Otherwise, don't snack or eat junk. Eat foods that will fill you up (salmon, eggs, full-fat dairy, etc.). You have 3 kids in a pandemic so I can't imagine you'll have much spare time to eat, even if you have help -- for me, this constraint helped me keep the excess eating to a minimum.

I gained 27 lbs with my first and second. Both times, I lost the first 18-20 lbs pretty quickly but couldn't lose the remaining 7-9 until after I weaned (I'm pretty short so this is actually a significant amount of weight for me). The first time I never really lost it all. The second time I was able to because 1) I either work or take care of the kids pretty much all day long - not much time for leisurely snacking; 2) had baby #2 during the pandemic so I'm not going out to dinner or parties or such where there is a lot of unhealthy food around; 3) I drink way less (because of factors 1 and 2), and 4) I bought a Peloton and can work out hard regularly. Second baby is now 14 months and I'm back to the weight I was before I had baby #1. I think it's a combo of all of these factors, not one in particular.

The body takes a year to fully get back to normal. You may lose the weight but the body will have a few new changes. You birthed a human, be kind to yourself.
