Likely safety Brandeis (although maybe it’s too small?)
True safety Belmont (it’s a pretty campus near Vandy)

Brandeis is small and it's not really in a college town. I think Tufts, BU, and Northeastern would be better if he's interested in the urban or college city/town lifestyle.

I’m what world are Tufts, BU and NE safeties for this applicant?

From a rigorous DC private (Sidwell or similar) they are safeties. It's a different world than public.
With only three B+ grades he is likely top 20% in the class, maybe even top 10%.

None of those three are safeties.

No, they are not. Not even close. BU mayyybe but not Northeastern and definitely not Tufts.

Brown and Chicago have very little in common other than both being fine schools. In your opinion, which would be a better fit for him?

One of my DSs with similar stats is at W&M. Not a safety, but a good bet, especially for a boy.

My other DS, also with similar stats and a strong desire to go to Brown, ended up at Clark with substantial merit aid. He liked it and did really well there. I highly recommend it. Worcester is somewhat of an acquired taste, but DS liked it and with 5 colleges there, there seemed to be a lot going on. It's also a really easy trip to Boston.

Just listing relatively urban schools is not helping on the "safety" part of the equation. Tulane, Case and W&M are not safeties. If one applies ED or ED2, with those stats, there is a good shot.

Agree that Tufts is not a safety for anybody--especially without showing previous interest, huge yield protection there. However, Northeastern and BU are 100% safeties for a candidate like OPs son. I guy, from Sidwell or St. Albans (assuming it's one of those-if it's GDS, Burke, or Maret, it's true, those won't have quite the same rate of acceptance). But those grades put a kid at the top 15% of StA or Sidwell.

They would be safeties for a A/B+ student from Sidwell.

This.
3 B+ grades from Sidwell/STA is likely in the top 10%. He's a very, very competitive applicant.
It's very different from public. This is not a public/private debate--just calling a spade a spade. These are about as good as a kid's grades get at these privates.

But if they accept another kid or two from his school (say with all or more A's), isn't he out there?

Schools with small acceptance rates are not safeties. Period.

No obsession but it's not a bad school to apply - rolling admission is always nice, not too hard to get in, middle of city, not TOO big or too small...Having one acceptance early in the process is priceless.

All this and a wonderful city!
