| I hope this is true. I think it’s ridiculous that my daughter who gets straight As in high school has to worry about a C from middle school Spanish factoring into her GPA. |
|
Here is a link to the resolution. Looks like the superintendent is supposed to report to the Board by December. I guess there is not yet a decision.

Link to approval? |
| That’s wonderful- My 9th grade son is a straight A student. If he stays that way I want his level 1&2 language not to count or his Tech Ed class. The only non honors class he will take in HS is PE I think. |
Does anyone know if the super has acted yet? If not I want to call or email in support. |
She got a C semester grade? |
| I just called the superintendents office and asked. She wasn’t sure of the status, but said she thought it was being discussed at the next board meeting. Anyway I left a message supporting allowing high school kids to not have middle school grades calculated into their High School gpa. The number is 240.740.3020 if anyone else wants to call to express support. |
Yes. |
| I have a 7th grader and when we enrolled in classes for 6th grade we had to sign something saying we understood middle school languages go on high school transcript/GPA calculation. |
OMGosh, PP. That must have been a terrible experience. |
They don't have honors PE at your school? |
| So could DD include honors Geo but not Spanish 1 or is this all or nothing? |
Yes. I wish I had known this last year, though...! |
|
Just to be clear, if you have a current 9th grader or current middle schooler, they have the option to include or not include middle school grades for "high school-level" classes in their high school GPA's. i.e. Algebra, Geometry, language classes, etc.
This is already policy. https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/ikcra.pdf In June, the Board of Education resolved to apply the same policy to students who are currently 10th and 11th graders. The superintendent was supposed to have reported back to the board regarding "feasibility, issues, and possible timeline" by 12/2021. So there is not yet any mechanism in place to implement the policy. But the policy has already in principle been approved by the BofE. |
Eh sorry I misspoke a bit : The BofE voted and said, "this policy change should happen." The superintendent is supposed to have "explore[d] the possibility of giving all MCPS high school students, regardless of the year they entered middle school, the opportunity to recalculate their high school grade point average without the grades earned in high school courses taken in middle school" and is supposed to have reported back to the BofE by next month. That's where things now stand. |
