| Another day in MCPS another problem. It’s almost daily now. Restorative justice at work!! |
If Restorative Justice worked, they wouldn't have these problems. I don't get what it will take for MCPS to bring in real security and safety precautions. Someone dying or seriously hurt (which it sounds like happened). |
| Kids are a mess because the US is. They can feel it just like we can. We have no rule of law. Traitors and vigilantes running free with zero consequences. A global pandemic which no one in the beginning knew how to handle with tons of mixed messages. What do you all expect? Now we have the GOP screaming about PTA’s and school board meetings siding with the out of control parents. Yeah teens are the problem. |
At the high school level, its too late to save most of these kids. Yes, if you are blaming covid, mental health and society, you are excusing their behavior. Kids misbehaving is partially the parents fault. Take responsibility for your kids and stop expecting the schools to do it. |
No, their parents are the problems. Your post makes no sense. As parents you lay down the law. You have expectations, monitor your kids and give consequences/punish when appropriate. You start when they are little. You spend time with them and have a good relationship so they feel loved and wanted. If they have mental health issues, you get them mental health treatment. If they are struggling in school, you get them a tutor, saturday school or help them. I expect parents to step up and parent. I expect MCPS to come down with strong consequences for violence in the schools. And, hold parents accountable for their kids behavior. Rambling about the GOP, PTA, school boards isn't helping. |
| So... what actually happened? |
| My kid told me that a kid was hit in the head with a chair. Horrifying. Expulsion should ensue if witnesses can corroborate this. |
Don't forget the xray machines - kids have backpacks. And the buses will need to run a couple hours early to get the kids through the lines. |
Yeah. It's not just MCPS; it's the entire US. |
I do not think expulsion exists. Suspension does not really even exist. |
The rumor is that one boy was gently teasing another. That kid went nuts and started beating the crap out of the teaser with a chair, to the point where he was hospitalized. Then he ran off, so the school was put into lockdown. I don't think metal detectors are helpful if the weapon of choice is a chair. What is needed is better mental health interventions, and removing children with this kind of disposition to more secure facilities where they can be catered for more appropriately. |
How do you know who those kids are? There have been a lot of stresses in kids' lives in the past year and a half. Some that might be fine otherwise, or at least not putting other kids in the hospital, are clearly snapping. We don't know who they will be. |
They both exist, but are only to be used as a last resort. https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/jgarb.pdf |
They are good for knives and guns. Mental health interventions would not help. This kid was probably teased for years and go to the breaking point. We need to address the issues, like this kid being teased for years, not just put a bandaid via a quick therapy session. |
It exists. My school sent a kid to an expulsion hearing this fall. Expulsion hearings are mandatory for weapons. |
