| You can't buy one but you can make one like Mad Max's car. |
| Find an old, pre-electronic vehicle in good repair, because none of our cars will run when they take out the electric grid in a doomsday scenario. |
| A Marauder is really the only sensible answer |
Yep. Every time my brain goes down this rathole, I realize that we are totally screwed long before the gas runs out or goes bad. |
|
Gas gas a shelf life of 3 months. So sure you may “bug out” but your car will turn into a metal tent soon enough.
https://www.jdpower.com/cars/shopping-guides/how-long-can-gas-sit-in-a-car-before-it-goes-bad The idiocy of your whole premise is inane. I have a 4x4 Toyota because we have a large family and ski frequently. But you are just falling for the JEEP fad that is running high now Any car that makes a break for it off road will stand out and someone with a bigger gum will eventually take it from you. Get a car that makes sense for your day to day family living, not some nut job fantasy. |
That assumes an EMP though. How do you like horses OP? |
|
Do you remember what the roads were like on 9/11?
The best doomsday vehicle is a bike. And after 5 years of no maintenance, the toads will be unusable even for that. |
| I'm thinking you get a normal car for the commute and an ATV to bug out. Don't forget to learn how to fix the motor! |
Good idea but until the doomsday comes I need to commute from Bethesda to Tysons |
|
| Or just buy a hybrid car with really high gas mileage. |

If this is a serious question, then OP wants a pre-1980-ish car, with the simplest possible mechanics and zero microprocessors. He needs something that can be maintained with minimal tools and knowledge. I'd guess that something like an old Army surplus Jeep would work, since there are service manuals for every part of it that are widely available. I'm not a mechanic, though, so maybe there are better options.
The point about gasoline having a shelf life is real, although I believe that additives exist to extend this. It might be worth looking into a diesel vehicle; these can run on kerosene, which has a much longer shelf life. Diesel engines are mechanically different, though, and there are probably fewer mechanics who are good with them. |
Seconded. In an evacuation scenario you're not going to move faster than a fast bike can go anyway, because of traffic snarls. Dirt bike might be worth considering. |
Where do I get an old army surplus Jeep? I’d like that if not for the doomsday then just for fun |
