So if it’s stupid advice ignore it why would it be wounding if you weren’t aghast at the idea? If someone suggested my science nerd daughter should go to cosmetology school I would think “that’s weird, she’s not suited for that!” Not “boo boo! Someone suggested my snowflake go to vocational school!!!” And throwing in the “competitive private” is lame. It’s obvious there are many hundreds of school where op’s son can go-the real issue he possibly can’t get into one that op thinks is good enough. That’s her problem! |

Do you people seriously think that the Master Electrician who signs off on the work done to route thousands of volts of electricity through your home didn't do well in math back in high school?! My cousin is a Master Electrician and he had comparable scores to my brother and I who were accepted into top colleges. My cousin wanted to be an electrician. He had no interest in college. Accomplishing his goal wasn't some sort of consolation prize. And honestly, most kids who don't have solid scores and grades probably couldn't make it to the top of that trade. For those of you who think you're being respectful of people in the trades by scolding OP, you're actually doing the exact opposite.

My brother and sister are both in trades and I think op earned her scolding. |

I have average kids too. I posted something a few years ago in DCUM and someone wrote my daughter needs to paint nails (not that there is any wrong with that, I have a friend who has a very successful salon)
Update: she is about to graduate a fourth tier school and has been subbing for MocCo and will likely get job there as elementary school teacher. Anyones kid would be lucky to have her as a teacher. Go average kids! |
This. How about we realize everyone has a path in life. The most successful people I know did not go to college. |

"The most successful people I know did not go to college."
Give me a break. |

Guess what most kids are (by definition): AVERAGE
Don't drink the DCUM College Forum kool aid, for a minute. Tons of kids have B averages (which means GOOD). Posters here would have you believe that they are losers. Of course, most of them are amazing humans who will contribute in important ways to our society. Getting into a T20 ranked school is NOT the the point of life. Parents who believe it is are bad parents, and their kids are likely to have bad values and mental health problems. So, rock on OP. You need to take the most vocal on this site with a HUGE grain of salt. |

"The most successful people I know did not go to college."
If you think college is so inconsequential and unnecessary, why are you in the College and University discussion forum? Do you also hang out in the Fashion and Beauty forum telling people that the hottest people you know don't exercise or brush their teeth? |
I know people in the fashion and the music industry. I'm on here because I have an average student. |
| OP here. Totally get the criticism. You’re right and my apologies. I think most trades are beyond certainly me or my kids in terms of skills and other very positive attributes. And yeah, the “competitive private school” comment was a mistake. Very sorry- I’m just in a bad place tonight and I sincerely apologize to anyone I offended. |

"It’s obvious there are many hundreds of school where op’s son can go-the real issue he possibly can’t get into one that op thinks is good enough. That’s her problem!"
Where in the world does this level of anger come from? Is this how you usually respond when someone asks you to be kind to them? |

Read Jeff Selingo’s book, Who Gets Into College and Why - he is a local writer (and parent himself) and writes very sanely about the college admission process. Well researched and more knowledgeable than anything you will find on this board.
I like his tag line that it matters HOW you go to college, not WHERE you go. He also reminds readers that, while the top schools are more selective, most colleges are actually easier to get into these days. Don’t let this board get you down. Many people don’t know what they are talking about. |
DP. I know two self-made billionaires who did not attend college. I’ve met a third (Bill Gates) who attended but did not graduate. That’s in addition to quite a few more run of the mill millionaires that I know. Most college graduates are salary workers who won’t take the risks necessary to get really rich. |
This. |
NP. You didn't offend me, OP. I'm with you. DCUM will make parents of average kids feel like their kids are actually in need of remediation. When you read post after post insisting a 3.7 is not a good GPA, it can really mess with your mind. I have to remind myself, this forum is probably used by a tiny, tiny group of people, most of whom have kids with sky-high stats. It's unthinkable to many of them that their student would ever have a *gasp* B in any class, much less an ACT of less than 30. The reality is that these people are living in a bubble. I've gotten some really good information here, but have mostly learned to ignore the clueless posters. |
