Throwing out our elected reps over prolonged school closures

That's just not even remotely true.

I'm not sure there's a single city in America, besides San Francisco, that kept schools closed longer than D.C. We are an extreme outlier in how long we kept kids out of school.

Really? Compared to NoVa and MoCo?

DC had kids in classrooms watching their teachers on zoom. That's not opening and it's not opening completely.

Yeah the alternatives to Bowser are way, way worse, if you want to keep schools open. The council member that is running for mayor and not an anti-semitic anti-vaxxer is Robert White, and he supported delaying school reopening.

I'd be happy if someone else ran, but right now it doesn't look like.

+1. I'm no fan of Bowser and the idiotic Democrats who run this city, but OP, if you think that any of the realistic candidates for Mayor will be better than Bowser on this issue, you are wrong. Please do not throw your vote and energy away on some fringe candidate in DC who truly has no chance of being elected. I'm a strong Republican, but have accepted the landscape in DC.

At least Bowser stood up to the nuts who wanted to continue unlimited online learning for any parent who demands it. That's about as good as we're going to get here.

Yeah, I take my anger out on 1) Robert White, and 2) my Council members. I've begun to write my Council members all.of.the.time.

Burbio ranked states -- and no, DC isn't a state and is more comparable to a city -- but as a state DC was last in terms of the number of in-person student-hours last year.

If someone ran as an anti-teachers union critic of school closures, they would trounce Bowser. There is a lot of anger out there that some enterprising politician will learn to tap into.

Not necessarily. It could be someone running as a centrist or as an anti-incumbent populist.

The problem is that they'd have to run as an independent. They certainly wouldn't win the dem primary, unless Bowser gets some scandal attached to her (ala Vincent Grey). And do you really think the DC voters are going to vote in anything other than a D?

There's a vast section of this city that's also probably going to just remember Black Lives Matter plaza (which I don't think is a bad thing). Bowser made a massive, permanent, central monument to a moment/movement, and I would imagine that would go pretty far in terms of the less engaged voter.

I am not voting for either of the other candidates who have already declared. We will see if anyone else throws their hat in. At the moment, Bowser looks to be the least bad of a bad lot.

I think you're misreading the public. There's a lot of anger out there over schools. Incumbents across the board are going to get slaughtered.

But Robert White can, in no way, harness that anger. If anything, he's far, far worse when it comes to school opening. I LOL at thinking of him trying to harness any anti-union sentiments, because he is so supported by the teachers' union. I would be totally thrilled if he did decide to throw the WTU and their support under the bus, though.

I agree that someone could come in and try to harness the anger, but it ain't going to be the people currently in the race.

Not in NJ. Governor didn't lose.

What you will get, though, is a bunch of right wing anti education nut jobs, throwing around dog whistle words they have no understanding of, in office who will singlehandedly try to privatize public school with special interests. Pretty sure that isn't the goal.

Parents need to understand the ramifications of a global pandemic and not just their self interest.

The last forum on the planet where you will find wisdom on DC local politics is DCUM. Sorry, ladies, but the overwhelming majority of DC voters are not rich white people who send their kids to Janney. DC voters aren't going to bend to your whims like the idiots in Virginia.

Dude you really don't have a good assessment of the ladies of DCUM if you think that we all wanted schools open. Or even that the Janney moms wanted schools open.

DCUM moms largely were (and still are) wildly risk-averse and were totally freaking out about opening in the midst of delta.
