I'm ecstatic.

I’m in loudoun county and it was SO HARD to find care for the next 6 days (they’re off today and all next week). Our final plan is that Dh and I will take turns calling out sick from work. We couldn’t get off with only 2 weeks notice.

You mean "remind you that school isn't daycare"?

I think they know some of you will never get it.

They should close the week after.

Why? For Covid? People who travel will just extend their travel by a week.

Right I agree. I really think they just need to tell teachers they can't take off though. I mean it is that way in any public facing job. You need coverage. I dont blame teachers for asking, I blame admit for granting. They need to be better/stronger managers.

Treating teachers like crap will help how, exactly?

It is not treating people like crap to tell them that they are unable to get days off if there isn't enough coverage. I work for the federal government. We put in for holidays 6 months in advance. We get off if covered. It is how most jobs work.

They don't have to ban everyone from the day off but they should adjust to staffing. I dont see it as cruel.

I dont mean they should tell them now when it's already been granted. But they should have told people when the days were requested that the day off was subject to obtaining coverage and advised that it might not be possible but that they could request other days.

Do most salaried positions that require a college degree have substitutes when someone takes PTO? I work for the federal government, and I arrange my annual leave so that my coworkers' projects can continue more or less as usual while I'm gone. If I'm out sick, other people step in or things just wait until I've recovered.

That is not what teachers' lives are like.

NP, and another LCPS parent here. Right, school isn’t daycare. However, when school closes, I have to make other arrangements for my Kindergartener, since DH and I both work full time. And when the school system makes these changes on short notice, whether that is due to snow days or to their complete inability to have seen this problem coming a mile away when they set up this ridiculous calendar, some working parents are left scrambling for childcare arrangements. The LCPS calendar for this week and next was crazy, and they should have realized it would be an issue. Guaranteed LCPS will do the exact same Thanksgiving week…we are already trying to make plans for it.

Yeah, LCPS is closed next week due to lack of subs (and an admittedly strange schedule they had in the first place).

Unbelievable. Yet another disaster that is VA schools. Parents, please send message with your local votes on Tuesday!

What message is that? I don't see how education is connected to Tuesday's election at all?

My mother is a retired teacher from a different county in VA, and she was never allowed to use personal leave on the days immediately preceding or following a holiday.

Right, if they are out (sick or not) they have to make plans for the day step by freaking step....ask a teacher if they would rather call in sick or just go in sick. It's more work to not go in on any day of the school year. I've never had a job like that...yes I might be behind, but it's not like I can't leave my office for an hour without arranging for someone else to be in the room and know what to do task by task.

THis is why teachers are fed up. (again, not a teacher)

ACPS parent here.

SUCH BS.

A week for Thanksgiving are you kidding? Just because it's a holiday on Thursday does not mean professionally, companies are closed for the whole week. That's outrageous to close school all week when the kids already have Wed/Fri off. Working parents don't get it off. Having this week off does nothing for my family - it just means I lose 2 additional days of vacation pay that I could have used if my kids got sick or actually really needed them for a reason other than babysitting them. There's 2 weeks off for holidays as well.. This country really penalizes working parents!!!

Private schools can't get subs either. My sister teaches in a popular Catholic school. They have been doubling up on classes when teachers are sick.
