Mazel Tov! Apparently he announced he was going to study Law in NY a few months after getting engaged and they haven’t seen each other in three years.
Three years is incredible. That their love was that strong. She fought for him and that marriage while surrounded night-and-day by courtiers who would have done anything to stop it.
She would be the ninth Japanese princess to be married to a “commoner”. Her own mother was a commoner. In Japan it was expected she would lead a private life as many of her predecessors have. No one stopped her marriage but it seems her fiancée was reviled. I hope she has the happiest of endings and enjoys her privacy in NY.
The Imperial Household didn't want her mother marrying into the family either. Fortunately or unfortunately as a woman Mako is automatically ex-communicated upon marriage, so it was going to happen regardless. I do wonder if they'll let 26-year-old Kako marry anytime soon though or if she even has a suitor she desires.
I doubt they disapproved? They announced her engagement and it was all happy news until it went south. Hopefully her sister also has a career like Mako and gets outta there. That might convince them to loosen their succession laws.
Yes, they (or rather her father) disapproved. The only reason she was even allowed to marry (after being engaged for three years) is because the Emperor (her father's brother) interceded and offered his support. Her father hung her out to dry. He's never even been pictured with Kei. Which is fine. As long as he's got his heir he's happy but I hope Hisahito and Kako continue to be happy within the household.
