Writing no phone use into a nanny contract

Anonymous
Definitely put it in the contract under duties. Take the positive approach and write in when phone use is acceptable.

Our nanny doesn’t have a problem with our no phones rule. BUt there are nannies here on DCUM who are hysterical about is (as you can see). Ignore the crazy posters and do what’s in the best interest of your child.

OP, you either trust your nanny or you don't. NO phone use is excessive and only the most desperate of nannies would agree to that. Would you rather have a desperate nanny who will sign anything to get the job, or a professional nanny with good judgment who has multiple offers to consider, most of which would not include a ridiculous clause like that?

No phone use while the child is awake is far from excessive and what our nanny (highly sought after and amazing) does on her own.

Due to the crazies on this forum, I think bringing up expectations in the ad and interview is enough but I certainly couldn’t fault a loving parent for adding it to the contract.

I don’t touch my phone all day either. My life is happy and productive.

Put it in the contract. Also do not give her a watch. She may be with you for years or a few months.

As suggested here, we plan to give our new nanny a new Apple Watch for emergencies. We are sure of our decision so no need to debate.

My question is how to include no phone use in a contract? Just state agreed to expectations or under cause for dismissal? Or after the ad, the interview and our reminding nanny, is it necessary to put into the contract at all?

Good luck!

First kid and unable to understand technology.

Not a good combo.

You should not use your phone when your child is awake. Fair is fair.

OP here. We know and it doesn’t matter to us if we have to buy ten watches. We want our nanny to have the ability to call 911 on her wrist.

OP, ask Jeff in the site comments forum how many of these posts are coming from one nanny. Please report back.

So she’s not allowed to have her phone in her pocket around the house? In her diaper bag during outings?

WTF! She isn’t allowed to use her phone AT ALL? I am a SAHM and use my phone a lot. Pulling up nursery rhymes on you tube to dance around with the baby. Checking the temp and radar before going for a walk to see if I’ll need an umbrella. Taking pictures when the baby does something cute. Googling a question about how to use a product or something.

Hire a nanny you trust and then trust her to use her judgement. Banning her from using a phone at all, ever, seems insane. If you hire someone who is scrolling social media for hours, then fire her, but you sound awful.

No, not when the baby is awake. She’ll have full breaks when he’s asleep as she’ll have no “chores”. She can pull up the weather, etc on her watch.

I assure you I am not awful. I’m simply not addicted to my phone.

And she can ask Alexa or Google to pull up any song or rhyme she wants. We have both and Alexa in every room.

+1. How is she going to send you cute pics of the baby? What if someone needs to reach her for an emergency? What if she has an android phone? I don’t have an Apple Watch, so what if she has an Android phone, does that mean you have to buy the nanny an apple phone to go with the watch or can you use the watch without the phone?

Op, I know you said this was not up for debate, but why did you make this decision? Were you thinking of hiring some 18 year old fresh out high school for a nanny, so you’re worried about all day phone use?
